BLOG TOUR – Men Of Iron by MJ Porter – Review.

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Men of Iron by the awesome MJ Porter!

Here’s the blurb

After the legends of Arthur, yet before the Saxon kingdom of Mercia, a tribal age of iron and rust ruled.

Britain AD540.

In the western hinterland of Roman Britannia, Meddi, the seeress of the Eorlingas tribe, can only obtain vengeance when her husband’s dead and her ancestral villa returned to her.

With her brother, Madog, as leader, they unite and stand strong against those who seek the riches of their villa. They must harness the power of the lost magiks of iron to make weapons to mercilessly oppose those who seek to challenge and fight to rule.

Meanwhile in the east, Waermund, a young warrior of Saxon descent, has exacted the ultimate revenge against his brother. Startled by his own ruthlessness, he knows his father will pursue him to exact retribution. He and his band of miscreant warriors must flee westwards and forge a new future by earning coin from those too weak to protect themselves.

Meddi and Wærmund are set to collide in a world of iron and rust.

Review

I’m a little biased these days as I’m a massive fan of the author so you can imagine my excitement at the idea of a brand new series!

Men of Iron is book 1 in the Dark Age Chronicles and perfectly shows the reader why MJ Porter is one of the best historical writers out there. MJ knows how to weave a tale. MJ picks history apart and seems to effortlessly know where a story can be found.

I know it won’t be as easy as that.. but MJ Porter makes it seem so simple and that in itself tells you how good the story is.

The main story focuses on a number of tribes and individuals as they face their own challenges of survival… each want what they believe is rightly there’s… if they manage to succeed can they keep a hold of it?

MJ Porter doesn’t do things small… the pace is spot on but you are introduced and thrown in the deep end with alot of information but i really loved how the pace suited the influx of characters and development, you had time take the key information and with the focus switching between tribes as the story unfolds it just helped me focus.

Men Of Iron isnt a tale to be rushed, its rich in detail and action and i love the authors talent at adapting to any style or era.

Theres plenty for the action fans to get to grips with but at the same time the plot takes priority over all and i feel it worked well, this one is more about the chracters than action. Loved it.

My favourites in this tale were Heafoc and Bucge, they had a dark wit about them which i just loved.

MJ Porter for me is unique and as such each offering never fails to hit the mark. 5* start of me.. plenty to love and plenty of promise for the next in the series.

My thanks go to the author, publisher and Rachel’s Random Resources for having me on the tour… no freebies for me.. check my socials and you’ll see i purchased a signed copy direct from MJ Porter… I’d be mad not too ha.

BLOG TOUR – Battle Mountain by C.J. Box. REVIEW

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Battle Mountain by C.J. Box.

Here’s the blurb.

Can Joe Pickett stop an old friend throwing his life away in order to gain revenge? The gripping new novel from #1 New York Times bestseller C.J. Box.

The campaign of hate and vengeance that a pair of violent criminals wreaked on Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett and his friend, falconer Nate Romanowski, left both men in tatters, but it was Nate who came closest to losing everything.

Facing his lowest ebb, Nate decided the only option was to drop out of society. Taking only his birds, he went off-grid to rediscover his true self… and prepare for his own revenge.

When Joe is called on to help the governor, whose son-in-law is missing in the Sierra Madre mountains, the investigation takes a darker turn when Joe and Nate’s very different journeys unexpectedly converge.

All will come to a head at Battle Mountain, but in a struggle neither of them would ever have seen coming, can both Joe and Nate survive?

Review

I’ve jumped into the authors world quite late but I’ve seen, and heard many a good thing and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

Jumping in at this stage did I feel like I’ve missed out? Yeah sure… but did it cause me any issues with reading and understanding the tale.. Not really.. if anything it just made me more determined to crack on with the author’s other works.

When a family member of Governor Rubon’s goes missing game warden Joe Pickett is tasked to find out what happened.

That whole opening scene had me hooked.. it’s was enthralling… it’s a brutal opening but sets the tone perfectly.

At the same time Nate Romanowski, a falconer, is still healing from a vicious attack from Axel Soledad. I don’t think he will ever heal truly but when a chance comes to finish Axel.. well Nate can’t pass that up.

There’s a lot of history between these men and little do Nate and Joe know how their paths are about to cross again.

Any time Axel was the focus I tingled… that man is ruthlessly scary but makes a wonderful read!

Being new to the series I didn’t feel out of my depth, more intrigued.. the characters have clearly developed over time but the history is made clear with context thrown in there just when you need it to understand motivations etc.

Not being familiar with the authors style or the setting I was very pleasantly surprised too with the idea of these ex-military guys, love for guns and birds, it made for a fascinating read.

Flow wise the pace was perfect for me, as we switch focus between the main characters. This gave me time to really ingest what I’d just read.

Axel Soledad was the most intriguing for me, disgruntled and with an axe to grind, not only against Nate but anyone in power and the idea he finds like minded people was scarily good.

I do feel like I should have read the rest of the series first… not because the book doesn’t work as a standalone.. more I can tell I’ve missed something good.. and I hate missing out on good books!!!

I don’t want to spoil anything but I think what I loved the most was simply the detail, the birds.. the guns.. the motivations, the feelings that poured out of each of the characters… it’s like nothing I’ve read before and there’s plenty to keep the action junkies happy too!

5/5 Stars

BLOG TOUR – Woden’s Spear by Donovan Cook – REVIEW

Today is publication day for Woden’s Spear by Donovan Cook! What better way to celebrate than for me to kick off the blog tour!!!!

Here’s the blurb.

Banished by those he loved; how far would he go for redemption?

449AD Old Saxony

Octa, the son of a mighty Saxon warlord, stands in the shield wall for the first time, eager to make a name for himself. But instead of the promised battle glory, fear overpowers him and he flees the battle, causing the death of his cousin and bringing shame to his family.

Disowned by his father, and hunted by his own people, Octa is spurred on by his mother’s vision for his future, a promise of greatness to come.

A chance encounter with a wiry traveller offers Octa a chance of redemption with a quest to retrieve a sacred weapon. To do this, Octa must travel to Britannia, a nation abandoned by the Roman Empire and unable to defend itself from its many enemies who smell weakness and riches.

Joining the famous warlords, Hengist and Horsa, Octa travels west to forge his future and redeem his past. He must succeed where others have failed. He must find the lost spear of Woden.

An epic adventure of turmoil, coming of age and survival set against a time when Britannia was on its knees and fighting for its very existence.
Perfect for the fans of Bernard Cornwell and Matthew Harffy.

Review

Octa is young and untested in war. He’s got a bit of swagger about him, especially when he’s given the chance to shine in the shield wall.

Fate has other things in store for Octa and after the death of his cousin, bringing shame on himself and his family he fleas to safety.

As Octa tries to escape his past an old man appears and offers a chance to redeem himself. Woden’s Spear was stolen, and the God wants it back… Could Octa be the one to help?

By chance Octa finds his way to Britannia where the spear is located but Octa doesn’t exactly know where to find it.. but he must if he’s to win back the favour of his family.

Along the way Octa is tested.. he truly believes he’s a coward, self-deprecating..but as the story progresses you see him slowly change as he meets new people along the way, see’s other perspectives.. was it really his fault what happened? Or was he pushed too soon?

We also learn that nothing happens by chance.. Octa was meant to be sent on this journey.. the Gods can be cruel and the decisions he makes could have major consequences… but the chance to get his hands on the spear is too hard not to take!

Historical Fiction is my bread and butter.. I love the genre and Woden’s Spear is a great addition… but it’s so much more than that…Dovovan Cook gives an extra dimension.. it’s the fantasy edge.

A lot of books touch on religions at the time and the turmoil caused but I loved that the author explored this in a different way and came up with a fascinating tale that included the will of the Gods… like the Gods were real and pulling the strings of men they use as puppets…

There’s still some great action scenes but I found myself really enjoying the adventure and didn’t miss the blood and gore.

I loved the character development arc of Octa too.. he grows throughout the tale but only with the help others.. and it’s those characters that really make things interesting. Badulf, Brigid and for me especially Reinald who I thought was the one who finally got through to Octa and made he see things in a different light.

Towards the end we also see development of Octa’s family which I loved, Octa’s father for example is a proud warrior.. when pushed too far what will he do for his family?

I was invested already but when I got about 65% through I was devastated to even need a toilet break as things were starting to get really juicy and it was one of those reads when you really don’t know what will happen next!

A super fun and exhilarating read 5*

BLOG TOUR – Crusade by Richard Cullen

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Crusade by Richard Cullen!

Here’s the blurb.

Continuing the epic historical adventure series from Richard Cullen, featuring The Black Lion…

Stripped of his birthright, Estienne Wace seeks to prove his worth in the deserts of Outremer!

Egypt 1219AD.

Abandoning the safety of England for the perilous shores of the Levant, Estienne Wace is thrust into the turmoil of the Fifth Crusade. Burning with righteous purpose, he is determined to reclaim the Holy Land in the name of Christ.

War rages along the banks of the Nile as a crusading army besieges the Saracen city of Damietta, certain that the price they pay in blood will return the glory and treasures they crave. But as the Black Lion roars, and the siege grinds on, Estienne’s unwavering faith is tested more and more by the grim reality of this brutal conflict.

As the siege turns on a knife edge, Estienne finds himself thrust upon a journey across the merciless desert. Stripped of everything, and forced into a dangerous alliance, he will grapple with the true meaning of faith, honour, and the price of salvation, in a land where nothing is as he once believed.

Perfect for the fans of Bernard Cornwell, Ben Kane and Conn Iggulden.

Review

We’ve come a long way with Estienne but he’s still trying to find his place in life.

Estienne sets out to show his worth and joins the Fifth Crusade.

War rages and the battles are bloody and brutal but something within Estienne changes. As time progresses and more blood is spilt on both sides, Estienne see’s the true cost of war.

When he first sets out for the cause he was certain it was right and just.. but as he meets the people that many would call enemy he starts to see them in a different light.

Its very much an internal struggle for Estienne.. he sees bad where he should see the righteous.. and good where he thought there was only evil.

Plot wise I loved it, the battles are detailed and exciting but it’s balanced perfectly with the development of Estienne when things don’t go to plan.  There’s a lot that happens to Estienne, but the pace never felt rushed and the character arc never forced.

While Estienne is a massive part of the story what I really felt the author did well was bringing in new characters who you instantly took a shine too. Kashta for example, a fierce warrior..Amalric a loyal companion.. these two especially stood out as being pivotal to the plot and Estienne’s development as his faith is shaking to the core.

For the hardcore fans of battle there’s plenty of blood shed but what I really loved was the emotion added, it’s not just a battle for the sake of it.. there’s real purpose to each thrust and I could easily read this book again and again!

I don’t think I’ve ever read something so perfectly balanced with plot & character development.. I mean..how.. there’s just no way you can improve.

Easy 5*

BLOG TOUR – The Uninvited Guest by Ruby Speechley

Today is my stop on the blog tour for The Uninvited Guest by Ruby Speechley!

Here’s the blurb.

One hen, one stag, one uninvited guest… who won’t make it to the wedding?

Megan Lewis is ready for her big day, but when an unexpected guest crashes her hen weekend, her perfectly curated world unravels.

Beth, claiming to be Jamie’s cousin, quickly charms the group. But when she gets close to bridesmaid Lauren, things take a dark turn, and a game of truth or dare exposes secrets from Megan’s past, shaking her world.

As the wedding nears, Megan realises Beth isn’t who she says she is — but she may be her only ally.

When you can’t trust anyone, not even your fiancé, who can you turn to?

An unputdownable novel full of suspense and secrets, perfect for fans of Shari Lapena, Alice Feeney and Lisa Jewell.

Review.

Megan is preparing to walk down the isle and it’s time for her to relax and have some fun with her friends. Will this be a relaxing hen weekend?? No chance.

From the outset somethings not right. I won’t spoil it but Megan seems to be on edge..thinking the worst.. but why?  Well that’s where the author has been very cunning.. there’s a big backstory and lots of moving parts in this engaging plot.

As the hen weekend kicks off it’s time for old friends to reconnect, but when Beth arrives things go from bad to worse..

The author leads you down the rabbit hole… you think you know who is out to get Megan but not the why.. but then there’s twists that make you doubt your initial thoughts.

As the story progresses we learn of hidden secrets that would rock the foundations of any marriage but who is really behind this? And why? What do they get out of this?

Plot wise it’s gripping and exciting and I loved how Megan developed with depth added along the way, it really helped strengthen the overall tale.

The list of characters isn’t too exhaustive meaning the author was able to focus and let the plot shine which paid off! The characters are well defined and develop nicely to aid the plot but little do you know at first where the plot will take you.. wow.. those last few chapters are immensely captivating!

I didn’t warm to Megan at first but as the plot thickens you understand her more and I can’t help but feel that’s exactly how the author wanted it. Megan has her flaws but ultimately isn’t a bad person.. she’s just made some bad choices.. she’s not the only one though!

This is my second foray into the authors work and I continue to be wowed! Excited to see what’s next.

The Uninvited Guest is a tale of hidden secrets and desire..wow!

BLOG TOUR – A Light of Little Radiance by Keith Anthony Baird and Beverley Lee

Today is my stop on the blog tour for A Light of Little Radiance by Keith Anthony Baird and Beverley Lee.

Here’s the blurb

Selina Dragavei wanders the northern wastes in fear of persecution from the Holy Roman Church. In Europe’s Dark Age, witchfinders scour the lands and traveller folk such as she are put to flame and suffering. On the ruthless steppes, she evades them but something far sinister will lay claim to her soul.

Returning to the world of men, a dark, transformed Selina has a thirst for blood and only the drift down through the centuries will quench it. But she won’t make that journey alone, as she determines to bring others to her. As a troupe of entertainers, they attend pageants, festivals, and even royal galas, where a family bound to darkness feed on unsuspecting mortals. Such debauchery, however, does not go unnoticed. Famed witchfinder, Desider von Brandenburg, becomes obsessed with bringing this band of vampire-devils to a righteous cleansing, and so a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues.

Will the holy man bring God’s wrath down upon them, or will Selina and her nightwalkers battle the might of Heaven and emerge unscathed? Only instinct, cunning, and a little luck under the watch of a wolf moon will tell…

Review

Selina is alone, hunted and looking for safety but what she finds is much darker and will change her life forever. Selina stumbles upon a dark creature which transforms her into something new.. something stronger.. something thirsty for blood.

When Selina returns to the world she needs to find a way to survive and quickly decides it’s time to gather a family. Selina sets out to create her family of misfits, each chosen for s specific reason.

The family explore the world together, feed and thrive.. until it starts to unravel…

Now the hunter becomes the hunted as the family flee to safety… but is anywhere safe?

Those hot on their heels won’t be deterred even though the endeavour will be costly for both sides.

Vengeance soon becomes Selina’s only goal, but can she finish this once and for all before it’s too late for her.

Oh wow, what a super and thrilling read A Light of Little Radiance was!  The story is brought to life seamlessly by two authors. I had wondered how well would it work, would it flow ok… well let me tell you the flow was immensely prefect. Its very much a plot driven tale but the authors did a wonderful job of making the characters come to life amongst the chaos of Selina’s life.

Its dark, and felt guttural in tone which suited the plot perfectly, the darkness of the setting mirroring the darkness within the characters as they struggle to survive. It’s strange but even though Selina and her family are the ones killing you actually want them to survive.. Selina’s beat the odds before but can she do it again?

Oh the last few chapters.. wow.. I had no idea how I wanted the book to end but I really don’t think there could have been a darker, more thrilling ending..its enough to make you tingle with excitement.

Outstanding story perfectly executed. The story felt fresh and thrilling.. and I loved every second!

5/5 stars

BLOG TOUR – Betrayal of Mercia by MJ Porter

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Betrayal of Mercia by MJ Porter!

Here’s the blurb

A King in crisis, a Queen on trial, a Kingdom’s survival hangs in the balance.

Londonia, AD835
The deadly conspiracy against the children of Ealdorman Coenwulf is to be resolved. Those involved have been unmasked and arrested. But will justice prevail?

While the court convenes to determine the conspirator’s fate, King Wiglaf’s position is precarious. His wife, Queen Cynethryth, has been implicated in the plot and while Wiglaf must remain impartial, enemies of the Mercia still conspire to prevent the full truth from ever being known.

As Merica weeps from the betrayal of those close to the King, the greedy eyes of Lord Æthelwulf, King Ecgberht of Wessex’s son, pivot once more towards Mercia. He will stop at nothing to accomplish his goal of ending Mercia’s ruling bloodline.

Mercia once more stands poised to be invaded, but this time not by the Viking raiders the so fear.

Can Icel and his fellow warriors’ triumph as Mercia once more faces betrayal from within?

Review

Is this really book 7 in the series already?? So much has happened to Icel yet it feels like only yesterday we met the young boy, supported by his Uncle, trying to find his place in life!

What’s in store next? Well the deadly conspiracy against the children of Ealdorman Coenwulf was uncovered with the help of Icel and now it’s time for those involved to pay the price.. this includes the Queen!!

Mercia has been forced to not only fight enemies from far afield.. but also those close to home and this is a major concern for all those involved.. King Wiglal.. and Mercia want justice..

The Wessex King and his men won’t let this lie though and Mercia is hit with even more betrayal and death as the tale unfolds.

I don’t want to spoil the plot for anyone but let’s just say the case against the Queen isnt as open and shut as the King would like and she still holds some power…and she’s not as helpless as it may seem.

I really found it fascinating to learn of a person’s worth during such instances, and that being in a position of power almost certainly made you trustworthy.. and the words of the common man/woman almost useless unless someone of power would speak of their worth. It really added the depth to that particular section of the story and added an extra umph when we are so used to excitement of battles and blood being the main focus.

Oh and don’t worry the battles are to come as things come to fruition and Wessex make their move.

Character depth and development was spot on as usual. Being on book 7 it’s credit to the author that they manage to keep adding naturally flowing detail into such a pivotal plot. I really love the little tit bits of the past thrown in too, memories on Icel’s uncle, the burning of Icel’s hand for example. These were great little ways for a new reader to be brought into the tale but also exciting for those devoted to the series as we have the chance to reminisce.

MJ Porter has a talent for historical fiction and this ever clearer when you see the shear amount of characters involved in the tale, which must have taken meticulous planning to not mix up names at pivotal points. I love Porter’s style too, I’ll be the first to admit names can be hard to retain in novels such as this are they aren’t names used in todays world.. but Porter manages to introduce what feels like natural pause points when the reader can reflect, and really absorb what is being told.

I’ve never really liked King Wiglaf but in this instalment It really showed him in a different light… the question is will he figure out who Icel really is and his family links? The King is kind to him now but if he see’s him as a threat to the throne will he be so kind?

How long can Icel hide the truth…

Without spoiling things I can honestly say this instalment is the best yet, flow is effortlessly perfect and the plot excruciatingly riveting.. I’m just glad I have the commute to work to enjoy the tale as I didn’t want to put this one down!

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Pendragon by Peter Gibbons!

Here’s the blurb

To save his people, a warrior must become more than a kin

Dark Age Britain crumbles.
Cruel Kings of Britain sit alone atop their hilltop fortresses as brutal Saxon invaders push ever forwards, greedy for plunder and weakened British kingdoms to conquer.

Blood feuds, jealousy, and pride keeps these Kingdoms isolated. Only the Pendragon, Uther, the high King of kings, has the power to unite the armies of Britain against their common enemy. But Uther Pendragon refuses to march to war as the Saxon hordes under the bloodthirsty leadership of Lord Octha grow ever stronger, quashing all that stands in his way.

Arthur leads a solitary warband, searching wild and lawless badlands bringing the fight to the savage Saxon warlords. As war brews, Merlin stirs up legends of Arthur, Excalibur, and the old gods, kindling a spark of hope in men’s hearts to unite and fight back.

As Saxon armies mass for war and destruction, Arthur must embrace the legend.
Can he bring the Pendragon to war, and march with the force of Britain to crush the Saxon invaders?
It will take all of Merlin’s power, Arthur’s iron will, and the strength of Excalibur to win this epic battle for the future of Britain.

The continuation of the compelling, fast-paced series from bestselling writer Peter Gibbons. Perfect for the fans of Bernard Cornwell.

Review

Pendragon is the second book in the The Chronicles of Arthur series by Peter Gibbons I stumbled happily upon the author about 2 years ago with the release of his Saxon Warrior series and I’ve been hooked on the authors works ever since.

The first book in the series nicely laid the foundations. Leaving the reader with almost a sense of dread in the pit of your stomach as you know things were starting to heat up.

I was keen to see how the author would build on the story and how he would find time to develop the characters in such a plot driven tale.

Saxon invaders are pushing through Britian laying waste to everything Arthur holds dear. Uther Pendragon has the might to bring down upon the invaders but sits by as war wages on.

Merlin…ah Merlin.. he’s a clever one and Gibbons expertly shows how he is able to manipulate not only the people around him but also Arthur. Merlin knows what he wants to happen and weaves the tales around Excalibur to excite Arthur, breathing hope into a world where it’s almost been lost.

Merlin is great manipulator, that’s his real power, and as the story unfolds you can see just how much the people of Britain need him. Don’t get me wrong Arthur is brilliant but without Merlin would the fight have been taken to the Saxons….They need each other and their skills complement each other.

In what I’ve come to expect and love from the author the story is fast paced but Gibbons effortlessly seems to be able to add the character development I need to truthly become invested in a series along with adding beautiful details throughout allowing you to envisage the time, location, the people. I really don’t understand how the author manages to weave such a well-rounded tale bringing all the different needs together, adding in his magic sparkle into such a heaving plot driven tale it’s a real talent to actually make the characters themselves come alive.. especially the likes of Arthur, Merlin and Uther.. I think most people will know of these characters, myths.. legends.. there’s a wealth of tales that have been told so credit to the author to not only make a story that feels fresh and new but at the same time comfortable.. it’s like Gibbons has masterfully brought together all the little traits and details of these characters throughout the years and has skilfully added his own impressions to make these individuals really come to life.

I’m not going to spoil the action aspects of the story but for fans of the genre it’s got everything you need… battle with plenty of blood to be spilt.. it’s a boiling pot of tension and exhaustion.

The plot is fascinating and captivating but balanced perfectly with the character ark, things naturally progress rather than being forced along, neither overshadows rather so they support each other.

BLOG TOUR – Valhalla’s Fury, (The Charlemagne’s Cross Series, Book 4) by Donovan Cook

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Valhalla’s Fury, (The Charlemagne’s Cross Series, Book 4) by Donovan Cook!

Here’s the blurb

Abandoned by his people and destined for Valhalla, do not stand in the way of his fury.

Ribe is lost, its hall burnt, and Charles is still missing. Sven must once more sail into dangerous waters to rescue his grandson.

King Louis of East Francia, the man who took Sven’s son from him almost twenty years ago, has Charles captive and uses him to force Sven to do his bidding and create chaos raiding his brothers Kingdom of West Frankia.

The long awaited meeting of Charles and his mother, Abbess Hildegard, is not what Charles dreamed it would be and soon it becomes clear that Charles is in even more danger. Torn between the heathen gods and his Christian god, Charles must decide where his future lies.

Sven must fight if he wants to see Charles again and keep the Cross of Charlemagne out of the hands of the Frankish kings. The only thing that Sven knows is that to save Charles, innocent people must die.

Review

I’ve been with this series since the beginning and was so looking forward to more adventures with Sven the Boar!

After events in the last book Sven’s home, Ribe, Is lost and his grandson missing. There’s nothing left for Sven to do than to set out to find Charles and get him to safety. He failed him once before and he has no plans to let him down again.

Sven and those loyal to him set out to meet with King Louis.. there’s not really a game plan here..he will do anything to see his grandchild safe.

King Louis has the upper hand from the start, the location of the meeting is very poignant and sets the tone for the tale.. history and the present are about to clash one final time..

Forced to submit Sven sets out to secure Charles safety by causing chaos around West Frankia.. the fighting is brutal and you can really see it take it’s toll on Sven who while under the bloodlust fights like the boar he is.. but he’s no love for it.. he’s fighting for Charles..

At the same time Charles has to grow himself, to learn how to stand up for himself, he’s still young but he’s forced to battle his demons, the deal with death and destruction that has surrounded him these past few years.

What I really enjoyed was the depth and growth of Charles and Sven, both battle the same issues, separated by faith in different gods each struggle to reconcile the death and destruction.. and who is actually watching over them. It’s a connection the two never really understand they have and the inner turmoil these two suffer is beautifully awful for the reader.

The fight scenes are superbly detailed but more than anything moving.. reading those scenes really evoked something within the reader… it’s harrowing but gives you chills with the excitement too!

I’m not going to spoil anything but the author really had me on the edge throughout this one. You never know what’s to come and you fear for the characters.

Development wise I loved the emotion added subtly.. the details bout the families following the men to war.. even the planning of events such as the sacking of farms etc.. every event had an undercurrent of emotion behind it.

Sven always hoped he would do something worthy enough to have ballads written about him.. Valhalla’s’ Fury is Sven’s ballad and I’m glad I took the time to listen to and enjoy the tale.

For fans of the series this won’t disappoint. I think you could pick this up now and understand the story as the author nicely adds detail when needed to give the reader the background but personally I’d say start at the beginning to really enjoy and understand the mighty SVEN!!

This is Sven’s tale of glory and redemption and it’s a ballad worthy 5*

My thanks go to the author, Boldwood Books and Rachel’s Random Resources for having me on the tour, I’ve been a fan of the author for a while so I was already grabbing a copy anyway, so what better way to share my thought then during the blog tour!

BLOG TOUR – Death Notice (Michael Walker Thrillers Book 2) by Simon Maltman

Today Is my turn on the blog tour for Death Notice by Simon Maltman.

It was a no brainer me signing up for the tour as I’d just finished reading the book when the chance came up.. what better way to share my thoughts than via a blog tour!

Here’s the blurb

2000

Michael Walker – former IRA volunteer, turned MI5 informer – had his quiet existence shattered when an IRA hit squad was dispatched on his trail to America.

One year on, Walker has been recovering from having his identity blown.

Now living in New York, he is visited by Amy Landish. The former FBI agent is looking for help to find her missing cousin, Lisa.

Walker and his other new ally, Brandon Johnson – a former thief who had robbed him – immediately agree to do anything that they can. The trio are reunited, once again set on a deadly course.

Their investigation leads to the small town of Six Mile, but the last thing they expect is to end up on the hunt for a serial killer.

Walker does not ingratiate himself with the locals or the police, while becoming the target of the killer himself. Just as Walker closes in on his quarry he receives news from home, in Belfast.

Walker moves from one danger zone to another as he finds himself back in IRA territory, where his old comrades want him dead.

Returning to Six Mile, the killer strikes again and closer to home. Walker made a promise to track him down and he doesn’t intend to break it.

Review

We are back with Michael Walker, former IRA, turned MI5 informer. When last we seen Walker all hell had broken loose when his old IRA buddies had located him and were out to get payback for him turning informant. It was a wild ride that saw Walker team up with unlikely friends Brandon and Amy.

You don’t necessarily need to have read the first instalment to understand the dynamic as the author does a brilliant job of adding detail when needed to help new readers quickly understand the history between them but it does add more depth in my opinion.

This time it’s Amy who needs help. Her cousin has gone missing and the police aren’t really helping..it’s time for Brandon and Walker to pack their bags.. drive over.. and hopefully figure out what’s happened.

In this small town the welcomes are few and far between and Walker is quick to get himself mixed up in all sorts of fights but just when he thinks he’s getting into the case he gets a call out of the blue… his old MI5 handler.. Walker’s father is in hospital.

It’s with a heavy heart our duo pause their progress and head to Walker’s old home to face his past.. lets just say theirs not many happy to see his face and it’s a risk going as he’s still got a target on his back. Will the reunion with his family go well? Ha.. no chance..and I wasn’t sure they would make it back in one piece.

Back in Six Mile it’s clear that a number of people have gone missing.. but why hadn’t anyone joined the dots?

Either way Walker isn’t going to stand by and let anyone else die… the issue is trouble seems to follow him and he can’t control everything. Can he stop the killer?

After the first instalment I was eager to see where the author would take the series next and I loved how he’s made this little team ready to support each other when needed.

The plot was certainly gripping and I loved the changing perspectives and the misdirection added. Until later in the book it’s really hard to pinpoint who the killer is..there’s too many suspects with their own motivations and it takes time of Walker to put the pieces together but when he does.. boy it’s explosive.

I felt the plot was a smart one, not only was it amazing but it also perfectly allowed for the natural flow of development of the character, building on the previous novel, reinforcing the connections between them.

Looking back at the notes I made when reading their were a couple pivotal scenes. I can’t say too much for one.. but lets just say a bullet hits home and it rocks the reader emotionally. The other was the authors sheer love of music and how he manages to integrate this into the tale, expertly using it to build the connection between Walker and Brandon. These moments really added the extra wow and depth I love, the characters feel real and you start to love the friendship they have.

Death Notice is certainly hard hitting, it’s a thriller for sure but it’s got something else too it..it’s the development of walker.. it doesn’t take anything away from the main plot, if anything it just makes the story even more exciting to read.

5*
