BLOG TOUR – Wolf’s Quest by Don Baldwin

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Wolf’s Quest by Don Baldwin.

Here’s the blurb

A feral child named Wolf is being raised by wolves deep in the forest until he is suddenly whisked away to a subterranean netherworld by the Tuatha De Danann; a strange and elusive race. In this otherworldly realm, where mortal time moves imperceptibly quickly, these ‘ever-living ones’ raise and train the boy for their own ends; returning a formidable stealth-warrior, back to the world of men.

In Wolf’s absence, Ireland has become a more dangerous place, as the Vikings strive to gain control of the country. But a young southern commander called Brian Boru and his enigmatic counsellor, Amergen, mean to thwart the Vikings’ plans. But they desperately need Wolf’s particular set of skills for a perilous mission deep into enemy territory. They set a trap to ensnare Wolf and his daring band of Rangers.

Review

Wolf, a young child, abandoned to the wild is raised by wolves. One day a higher power comes to take Wolf away… it’s time to prepare him for what’s to come.

Time passes very differently in the netherworld and when Wolf is returned to the world of man he really has no memory of his past as such.. but his connection with the wolves remains strong.

As the years pass Wolf has trained to be a ranger, an elite team able to carry out any task and leave without a trace.

When a job offer is thrown Wolf’s way he has no choice but to accept but little does he know the whirlwind adventure this will start.

Tasked with kidnapping a girl Wolf is torn.. things aren’t adding up.. the truth is being hidden from him but why and what is the ultimate end?

Wolf’s Quest is a fast paced epic fantasy novel without the word count.. it’s perfect for young readers or those not familiar with the genre.

So development wise.. the plot.. oh my this is one amazing world the author has created. I loved the setting of Ireland, the Vikings and the complex plot and even more so the netherworld. Being so fast paced there’s not questions per se, but areas I’d be interested to see the author visit again, it’s a vast world with so many options and the ending left me in no doubt more will follow which I’m very happy about.

Development of characters can be difficult in such a fast-following tale, but the author did a fantastic job of bringing them to life, infusing individuality along the way and giving meaning to their involvement. I think the author has neatly allowed himself space for development in future works.. While Wolf is the most developed there’s still room for growth and to explore his past and motivations more.. and that’s why I’m giving a 5* and not a 4* star.. I think the decision to focus more heavily on plot than characters was the right choice but it leaves a reader like me excited to see where the author will take me next.

Don has been writing for over forty years, and he has a healthy portfolio; mostly feature articles and Short Stories (two of which were prize winners –‘The Sea-maid’ and ‘Deep Thoughts’; a result of his deep fascination with the sea). He is also a regular contributor to several Irish national magazines, including ‘Ireland’s Own’, ‘Ireland’s Eye’ ‘The Irish Mountain Log’ and ‘Subsea’, supplying them all with a variety of articles on Vikings, mermaids, wildlife, mountains and history: while all four magazines have also published his short stories. Don also regularly publishes feature articles in both of his local newspapers, ‘The Dundalk Democrat’ and ‘The Argus’.

Don is an avid hill-walker and scuba diver, and he draws great inspiration from both the mountains and the sea, as, he notes, did the poet William Wordsworth (1807) “Two voices are there; One is of the Sea, One of the Mountains; Each a mighty Voice…” Don is also an ‘Advanced Adventure Sport Instructor’, reflecting his passion for outdoor adventure activities.

Besides his background in construction, Don has also completed several courses in English, Creative Writing, Short Story Writing and Freelance Journalism. BLOG TOUR – A Light of Little Radiance by Keith Anthony Baird and Beverley Lee

Today is my stop on the blog tour for A Light of Little Radiance by Keith Anthony Baird and Beverley Lee.

Here’s the blurb

Selina Dragavei wanders the northern wastes in fear of persecution from the Holy Roman Church. In Europe’s Dark Age, witchfinders scour the lands and traveller folk such as she are put to flame and suffering. On the ruthless steppes, she evades them but something far sinister will lay claim to her soul.

Returning to the world of men, a dark, transformed Selina has a thirst for blood and only the drift down through the centuries will quench it. But she won’t make that journey alone, as she determines to bring others to her. As a troupe of entertainers, they attend pageants, festivals, and even royal galas, where a family bound to darkness feed on unsuspecting mortals. Such debauchery, however, does not go unnoticed. Famed witchfinder, Desider von Brandenburg, becomes obsessed with bringing this band of vampire-devils to a righteous cleansing, and so a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues.

Will the holy man bring God’s wrath down upon them, or will Selina and her nightwalkers battle the might of Heaven and emerge unscathed? Only instinct, cunning, and a little luck under the watch of a wolf moon will tell…

Review

Selina is alone, hunted and looking for safety but what she finds is much darker and will change her life forever. Selina stumbles upon a dark creature which transforms her into something new.. something stronger.. something thirsty for blood.

When Selina returns to the world she needs to find a way to survive and quickly decides it’s time to gather a family. Selina sets out to create her family of misfits, each chosen for s specific reason.

The family explore the world together, feed and thrive.. until it starts to unravel…

Now the hunter becomes the hunted as the family flee to safety… but is anywhere safe?

Those hot on their heels won’t be deterred even though the endeavour will be costly for both sides.

Vengeance soon becomes Selina’s only goal, but can she finish this once and for all before it’s too late for her.

Oh wow, what a super and thrilling read A Light of Little Radiance was!  The story is brought to life seamlessly by two authors. I had wondered how well would it work, would it flow ok… well let me tell you the flow was immensely prefect. Its very much a plot driven tale but the authors did a wonderful job of making the characters come to life amongst the chaos of Selina’s life.

Its dark, and felt guttural in tone which suited the plot perfectly, the darkness of the setting mirroring the darkness within the characters as they struggle to survive. It’s strange but even though Selina and her family are the ones killing you actually want them to survive.. Selina’s beat the odds before but can she do it again?

Oh the last few chapters.. wow.. I had no idea how I wanted the book to end but I really don’t think there could have been a darker, more thrilling ending..its enough to make you tingle with excitement.

Outstanding story perfectly executed. The story felt fresh and thrilling.. and I loved every second!

The Berlin Agent by Stephen Ronson – REVIEW

Today I’m reviewing The Berlin Agent by Stephen Ronson

Here’s the blurb

A country at war. Bombers fill the skies. A parachute drops in the dead of night…

England 1940: Paris has fallen to the Third Reich. Farmer John Cook and society heiress Lady Margaret are waiting for the day when German tanks roll across the green fields of their homes. Both are ready for the moment they will disappear into the woods and the fields to carry out their top-secret orders – to do whatever it takes to fight the Nazis once they arrive on British soil.

Their worst fears are realised when a parachutist drops from a German bomber during an air raid. Arriving at the scene, Cook finds the white silk hanging from a branch, and a mysterious crate containing a complex piece of machinery. The spy is nowhere to be found.

But at night, Cook and Margaret hear German voices in the darkness. Reports come in of others hearing similar things, and there are whispers of an agent from Berlin…

With enemies already hiding among them, how far will Cook and Margaret go to protect the country and the people they love?

Review

After previously dabbling into the authors world and style of storytelling I was looking forward to reading this one.

Paris has fallen to the Third Reich and Farmer John Cook is on the lookout for spies.

Tension is high and one night a parachute is seen in the sky.. Cook sets out to find out who or what was dropped but things are a little muddled in the dark and who or whatever it was remains a mystery.

Cook tries to get on with his day to day life while keeping an eye out.. and two things quickly become apparent… at times strange voices can be heard.. are they German? And if so where are they?

The second thing is.. could there be trouble closer to home..there’s a lot of drama but is anything connected? Cook is a man of principle and he won’t stand by when someone needs help.. but can he keep everyone safe?

There’s a complex web of events that link wonderfully but at the same time mean the reader is thrown off the scent right until the moment the author wants you to know more. It’s a engaging puzzle waiting to be solved.

Plot and characters both developed at an easy to read pace.. there’s lots of meat on the bone with this one, plenty to get to grips with but it’s clever and gripping in it’s nature. The plot and characters support each other in the development so nothing felt out of place or rushed.

The only word I can think of to sum up the story is EXCITING. From first page to last it’s fun and intriguing, an exciting bunch of characters and you never really know what will happen next. 5/5 stars!

The Commuter by Emma Curtis – REVIEW

Today I’m reviewing The Commuter by Emma Curtis.

Here’s the blurb

I used to dread rush hour. Now I live for it…

Rachel wakes from a coma to discover her controlling husband has been killed, and the police suspect her of involvement.

But all Rachel can recall from the last few weeks are tantalising flashes of a fellow commuter. A man whose name she doesn’t know.

A man who has disappeared without a trace.

Now Rachel is a wealthy widow and the vultures are circling, wanting her in prison for murder, or failing that … dead.

Can Rachel discover the truth in time to save herself?

Review

I attended a boo k talk last year and The Commuter was suggested as a book to pick up and an author to watch, so I immediately put it on my TBR.

Rachel awakes from a coma to find out her husband is dead.. but she has no memory of the events that led up to that faithful day. She’s lucky to be alive but this is just the start of a spiral of events for Rachel as she unravels to truth!

We quickly learn that some instinctively don’t trust Rachel.. although she couldn’t have been there at the time her husband died… there’s gaps in her story that even Rachel can’t fill..

Things go from bad to worse when her husbands will is read and it’s not what everyone is expecting… if anything it raises more questions and causes more tension.

We start to learn more about Rachel and the what happened in the run up as bits of memories come back.. like a puzzle for Rachel to put together.

The quickly see her husband wasn’t exactly an innocent…his daughter is not very likeable and there was someone else in Rachel’s life.. but who.. and what does it mean.. is there a connection?

What unfolds is a very clever and complex plot that ultimately led to an untimely death.

I really enjoyed the flow as the story moves from current day, back to the past as Rachel’s memory returns.

The flow allowed for development of the characters at a natural pace, nothing felt forced or out of place.. the development just matches the flow perfectly in pace and made it a super engrossing read,

Character wise.. and the twists.. wow.. I don’t say it often but I really didn’t know what would happen next and I was hooked. I don’t want to spoil it but Rachel is really put through it!

When to bed each night I was excited for my own commute the next day just so I could pick up the book again!

What made this book such a gripping thriller was the main characters amnesia, as it allowed the author to take the story so many directions… and those twists were gob smacking!

This was more first foray into the authors work but it won’t be my last!.

Well worth grabbing a copy… 5/5  stars

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh – REVIEW

Today I’m reviewing The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh

Here’s the blurb

IN A VILLAGE WITH THIS MANY SECRETS, A MURDER IS JUST THE BEGINNING . . .

On New Year’s Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests.

He’s celebrating the success of his lakeside holiday homes, and has generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbours.

By midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake.

On New Year’s Day, DC Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects.

She grew up in the tiny community, so the murder suspects are her neighbours, friends and family – and Ffion has her own secrets to protect.

With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn’t who wanted Rhys dead . . . but who finally killed him.

Review

The Last Party came highly recommend so I picked up a copy to see what the fuss was all about.

Rhys Lloyd seems to have everything, famous and popular… so lets find out why he’s just been found dead!

DC Ffion Morgan, a local cop, is assigned the case but is quickly forced to team up with DC Leo Brady from the Cheshire Constabulary. Cross boarder relations… and as it happens.. oh I’ll not spoil it but I loved that the author managed to immediately make the characters more personable and real.

It becomes apparent that Rhys’s death wasn’t without foul play.. but who was involved and why?

There’s quite a bit of animosity surrounding this little lakeside community Rhys setup, locals and those they see as outsiders, does that have anything to do with it?

Well as it happens and as the case progresses we learn pretty much everyone has a secret.. not all relate to Rhys but it’s a complex wab of lies and deceit..

It’s more of a struggle too for Ffion who knows all the locals.. some are friends even.. but is there more to it?

The plot is very addictive and messes with your mind.. just when you think the mist is clearing another snippet of info becomes apparent which throws everything up in the air again!

The Last Party is a very clever tale of misdirection and intrigue. There’s subplots leading to conflicting thoughts you need to muddle through which was fascinating.. it’s soooo clever how the story unfolds and when the truth comes out it wasn’t what I expected.

Being a small community you learn quickly about the lives of the residents and the complicated.. or sometimes not so complicated relationships.. by unravelling at a steady pace it allows you to really get to grips with the tale.

The tale of me was made rather unique too being set on the boarder of Wales and England which opened this up to more possibilities and complex work relationships. Leo’s boss for example..no spoilers.. even with a solid plot there was time to devote to character development which added to the story rather than distracting me from the main plot. Being the first in the series the setup allows the author many directions to take so I’ll be interested to see what happens next.

BLOG TOUR – Betrayal of Mercia by MJ Porter

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Betrayal of Mercia by MJ Porter!

Here’s the blurb

A King in crisis, a Queen on trial, a Kingdom’s survival hangs in the balance.

Londonia, AD835
The deadly conspiracy against the children of Ealdorman Coenwulf is to be resolved. Those involved have been unmasked and arrested. But will justice prevail?

While the court convenes to determine the conspirator’s fate, King Wiglaf’s position is precarious. His wife, Queen Cynethryth, has been implicated in the plot and while Wiglaf must remain impartial, enemies of the Mercia still conspire to prevent the full truth from ever being known.

As Merica weeps from the betrayal of those close to the King, the greedy eyes of Lord Æthelwulf, King Ecgberht of Wessex’s son, pivot once more towards Mercia. He will stop at nothing to accomplish his goal of ending Mercia’s ruling bloodline.

Mercia once more stands poised to be invaded, but this time not by the Viking raiders the so fear.

Can Icel and his fellow warriors’ triumph as Mercia once more faces betrayal from within?

Review

Is this really book 7 in the series already?? So much has happened to Icel yet it feels like only yesterday we met the young boy, supported by his Uncle, trying to find his place in life!

What’s in store next? Well the deadly conspiracy against the children of Ealdorman Coenwulf was uncovered with the help of Icel and now it’s time for those involved to pay the price.. this includes the Queen!!

Mercia has been forced to not only fight enemies from far afield.. but also those close to home and this is a major concern for all those involved.. King Wiglal.. and Mercia want justice..

The Wessex King and his men won’t let this lie though and Mercia is hit with even more betrayal and death as the tale unfolds.

I don’t want to spoil the plot for anyone but let’s just say the case against the Queen isnt as open and shut as the King would like and she still holds some power…and she’s not as helpless as it may seem.

I really found it fascinating to learn of a person’s worth during such instances, and that being in a position of power almost certainly made you trustworthy.. and the words of the common man/woman almost useless unless someone of power would speak of their worth. It really added the depth to that particular section of the story and added an extra umph when we are so used to excitement of battles and blood being the main focus.

Oh and don’t worry the battles are to come as things come to fruition and Wessex make their move.

Character depth and development was spot on as usual. Being on book 7 it’s credit to the author that they manage to keep adding naturally flowing detail into such a pivotal plot. I really love the little tit bits of the past thrown in too, memories on Icel’s uncle, the burning of Icel’s hand for example. These were great little ways for a new reader to be brought into the tale but also exciting for those devoted to the series as we have the chance to reminisce.

MJ Porter has a talent for historical fiction and this ever clearer when you see the shear amount of characters involved in the tale, which must have taken meticulous planning to not mix up names at pivotal points. I love Porter’s style too, I’ll be the first to admit names can be hard to retain in novels such as this are they aren’t names used in todays world.. but Porter manages to introduce what feels like natural pause points when the reader can reflect, and really absorb what is being told.

I’ve never really liked King Wiglaf but in this instalment It really showed him in a different light… the question is will he figure out who Icel really is and his family links? The King is kind to him now but if he see’s him as a threat to the throne will he be so kind?

How long can Icel hide the truth…

Without spoiling things I can honestly say this instalment is the best yet, flow is effortlessly perfect and the plot excruciatingly riveting.. I’m just glad I have the commute to work to enjoy the tale as I didn’t want to put this one down!

5/5 Stars

BLOG TOUR – Casa Paradiso – 300 Years in the Life of a House by Francesca Scanacapra.

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Casa Paradiso – 300 Years in the Life of a House by Francesca Scanacapra.

Here’s the blurb

Lombardy, Northern Italy, 1637

Cristó Lovetta, a skilled stonemason, arrives in the rural village of Pieve Santa Clara to work on a nobleman’s house.

Haunted by a tragic past, Cristó wonders if he will ever find happiness again. However, as he immerses himself in his work, the warmth of the community and the beauty of the landscape convince him to begin a new life there.

Cristó designs and builds his own house, which he names Casa Paradiso. Over the centuries, Casa Paradiso becomes home to many generations, standing testament to lives beginning and ending, and witnessing the everyday challenges and triumphs of its inhabitants – from love lost and found, to the tragedies of war, the far-reaching consequences of political decisions made by powerful men and the evolving role of women in Italian society.

Casa Paradiso – the fourth instalment of the Paradiso Novels – is a shining, evocative saga spanning three hundred years in the life of a very special house, and a book that explores the enduring strength of the human spirit, contrasted with the transient nature of life itself.

Review

After reading one of the authors other works, The Lost Boy of Bologna, I was keen to read more. Casa Paradiso is actually the 4th book in the series but is very much standalone, so no prior reading needed.

As the title suggests the story follows the life of a house, Casa Paradiso, right from the moment the first brick is laid, and describes the beauty of the house over the years, and the love and skill put into the construction.

Each chapter is it’s own tale, it’s own time point in the life of Casa Paradiso. This made the story fun as the author was able to throw so many tales at us but at no time was it under or overwhelming. Each short tale left me feeling fulfilled and content but eager for more.  I especially liked the links to the past when people we’ve met before are mentioned, their connection to the house still there in one form or another.

Each story has it’s own kind of theme too as the author shows the challenges each occupant of Casa Paradiso faced, poverty for example, thefts, marriage troubles, death. At times it’s very light-hearted but at others earth-shatteringly moving..

Casa Paradiso is a vivid and heart warming tale that not only follows the lives of those who moved through the house and the surrounding area, but of the house itself..each brick, changes to the structure that ultimately remove some of it’s beauty but at the same time shows us the changing landscape of the land, railways and such and how this too plays it’s part in the fate of Casa Paradiso.

The only way I can describe the authors writing is beautiful. Francesca Scanacapra has a way of pulling the reader in.. it’s poignant and one of only a handful of novels out there I can truly say will stay with me.. some of the events leave you breathless..the writing is so emotive!

While the story is fairly fast paced with each story contained within a chapter as such, the author did a fantastic job of providing some depth and development for the characters, there’s clear direction and details given to really make the reader feel the emotion within the tale.

When I came to the authors note at the end of the book it was lovely to see where the inspiration for the house came from. It really does make you think.. what if these four walls could talk… we take property for granted sometimes and Casa Paradiso nicely reminds us not to forget history, for there’s always a tale to be told.

Having not read the first three books in the series I can certainly say they will be on the TBR for next year as I forgot how beautiful Francesca Scanacapra’s words are.

A stunning 5*.

BLOG TOUR – Pendragon by Peter Gibbons

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Pendragon by Peter Gibbons!

Here’s the blurb

To save his people, a warrior must become more than a kin

Dark Age Britain crumbles.
Cruel Kings of Britain sit alone atop their hilltop fortresses as brutal Saxon invaders push ever forwards, greedy for plunder and weakened British kingdoms to conquer.

Blood feuds, jealousy, and pride keeps these Kingdoms isolated. Only the Pendragon, Uther, the high King of kings, has the power to unite the armies of Britain against their common enemy. But Uther Pendragon refuses to march to war as the Saxon hordes under the bloodthirsty leadership of Lord Octha grow ever stronger, quashing all that stands in his way.

Arthur leads a solitary warband, searching wild and lawless badlands bringing the fight to the savage Saxon warlords. As war brews, Merlin stirs up legends of Arthur, Excalibur, and the old gods, kindling a spark of hope in men’s hearts to unite and fight back.

As Saxon armies mass for war and destruction, Arthur must embrace the legend.
Can he bring the Pendragon to war, and march with the force of Britain to crush the Saxon invaders?
It will take all of Merlin’s power, Arthur’s iron will, and the strength of Excalibur to win this epic battle for the future of Britain.

The continuation of the compelling, fast-paced series from bestselling writer Peter Gibbons. Perfect for the fans of Bernard Cornwell.

Review

Pendragon is the second book in the The Chronicles of Arthur series by Peter Gibbons I stumbled happily upon the author about 2 years ago with the release of his Saxon Warrior series and I’ve been hooked on the authors works ever since.

The first book in the series nicely laid the foundations. Leaving the reader with almost a sense of dread in the pit of your stomach as you know things were starting to heat up.

I was keen to see how the author would build on the story and how he would find time to develop the characters in such a plot driven tale.

Saxon invaders are pushing through Britian laying waste to everything Arthur holds dear. Uther Pendragon has the might to bring down upon the invaders but sits by as war wages on.

Merlin…ah Merlin.. he’s a clever one and Gibbons expertly shows how he is able to manipulate not only the people around him but also Arthur. Merlin knows what he wants to happen and weaves the tales around Excalibur to excite Arthur, breathing hope into a world where it’s almost been lost.

Merlin is great manipulator, that’s his real power, and as the story unfolds you can see just how much the people of Britain need him. Don’t get me wrong Arthur is brilliant but without Merlin would the fight have been taken to the Saxons….They need each other and their skills complement each other.

In what I’ve come to expect and love from the author the story is fast paced but Gibbons effortlessly seems to be able to add the character development I need to truthly become invested in a series along with adding beautiful details throughout allowing you to envisage the time, location, the people. I really don’t understand how the author manages to weave such a well-rounded tale bringing all the different needs together, adding in his magic sparkle into such a heaving plot driven tale it’s a real talent to actually make the characters themselves come alive.. especially the likes of Arthur, Merlin and Uther.. I think most people will know of these characters, myths.. legends.. there’s a wealth of tales that have been told so credit to the author to not only make a story that feels fresh and new but at the same time comfortable.. it’s like Gibbons has masterfully brought together all the little traits and details of these characters throughout the years and has skilfully added his own impressions to make these individuals really come to life.

I’m not going to spoil the action aspects of the story but for fans of the genre it’s got everything you need… battle with plenty of blood to be spilt.. it’s a boiling pot of tension and exhaustion.

The plot is fascinating and captivating but balanced perfectly with the character ark, things naturally progress rather than being forced along, neither overshadows rather so they support each other.

Overall what always impresses me with Peter Gibbons is within a well-established genre he keeps offering something new that demands your every ounce of being from the first page.

5*

The Heretic of Haltemprice Priory by Steven A McKay – REVIEW

Today I’m reviewing the newly released The Heretic of Haltemprice Priory by Steven A McKay!

Even better news is that this book contains a bonus novelette, The Christmas Hunt too.

Here’s the blurb

TWO EXCITING WINTER TALES IN ONE COLLECTION!
England, c. AD 1330

Winter fast approaches in East Yorkshire and the dark, cold nights have brought more than just frost to the newly founded Haltemprice Priory. An oppressive pall hangs over the area like a smothering blanket, prompting one of the anxious monks to seek help from an old friend.
Robert Stafford, a friar from nearby Wakefield, has some experience in dealing with strange mysteries, having helped solve a number over the past few years. As he settles into Haltemprice however, things begin to escalate and the friar fears he might have bitten off far more than he can chew this time. Calling on his friends Will Scaflock and the bailiff John Little to work with him it seems they may face more than just earthly enemies as they battle the gloom crushing the spirit, and perhaps the very life, from the inhabitants of the priory.
One monk with a library of eldritch books seems to know much about the progressively more deadly troubles afflicting windswept, frostbitten Haltemprice, but is he a lunatic, a heretic, a murderer, or perhaps something even more terrifying?

The Heretic of Haltemprice is the ideal story for a stormy winter evening beside the fire, but if that’s not enough, this collection also includes a second, bonus tale, The Christmas Hunt!
Will Scaflock has gone missing after chasing three outlaws off his property and, as the day draws to a close with no sign of his return two old friends arm themselves and set out in the midst of a blizzard to find him. There’s sure to be a Christmas miracle in this fast-paced, snowy adventure, but it might not be what John Little and his friends expected!

Review

The Heretic of Haltemprice Priory is a novel set in the world of The Forest Lord series by Steven A. McKay.

I’m getting used to the author belting out a cracking novella each year, I have a soft spot for the series as I still remember picking up the first book in the series and finding my love for Robin Hood and his band of men.

That being said.. how can the author give us something fresh and new.. but also make the reader feel at home? Well I’m not quite sure how he keeps coming up with these cracking storylines but he certainly knows how to keep the series going.

Friar Tuck has been contacted by an old friend to help with some strange events happing at a new priory. Tuck has had a fair share of adventures into the weird and wonderful so it’s no surprise he’s there.. ready to hunt out the truth.

The thing is.. with the previous happenings you always felt it could perhaps by explained.. somehow.. but this…there’s a strange melancholy in the area and everyone is affected.. how could this be anything other than supernatural? It’s darker from the off but that just intrigued me even more.

Things quickly escalate when some animals are stolen and sacrificed. Tuck knows he needs help so seeks out some old friends to help him.. none other than Will Scaflock and the bailiff John Little… these three have been friends for years ever since they followed Robin Hood.. it’s been many years but they haven’t lost their touch and quickly set about finding the culprit.

But.. yeah it’s not that easy. If anything things get worse and the sacrifices continue.

Tuck has a suspect.. but no real evidence but as time goes by things just get more creepy,.. the melancholy.. the smell..death.. disturbed graves.. it’s enough to send shivers down the spine.

For me the tone was perfect, it’s dark and gloomy but perfectly balanced with detail, polished plot and character development.. add in the wow factor ending..a mad dash to put an end to things.. and a twist at the end to lift the spirits.

The best gift an author can bestow is imagination and McKay is the ultimate gift giver!

Quite honestly it felt like a short story but it’s not.. I think I just felt so at home.. back with Tuck that time just didn’t register, so you definitely have enough story to really get to grips with.. don’t say I didn’t warn you.. you’ll not be able to put it down.

To top it off the reader gets an extra novella thrown in and it’s another adventure for some of our favourite characters when Will goes missing!

Pace wise the whole book flows well and engages your mind. For fans of the series you are transported right back to the authors previous works and it just reminds you just what we are missing but offers hope to the readers for more. What I loved is that again the author manages to give the reader what we want but also leaves a lot to our own imagination.. what comes next could be anything and It will great to see what the author comes up with next.

Astounding 5*

To find out more head to Goodreads or Amazon.. but be warned the book is just new out..so my advice is just take my word as gospel and buy the damn book! Ha.

Review

I mean.. after the ending of the last book I just had to continue the series. For those not familiar we are following the lives of the last humans on earth as they try to stay alive..One day life as we known it vanished.. all but a few remain and the how and why is still a little unclear..the reader gets to search for the truth at the same time as the characters. One family in particular got given a second chance.. but this world..it’s not safe for anyone with monsters now roaming.

To understand this instalment it’s vital you’ve read book 2.. a lot has happens but there’s still so much unknown.. and that’s where the events of Days of Fury comes in..

The author manages to fill in some of the blanks, the how’s and the whys of how characters ended up where they did, and wonderfully adds depth not only to the main cast but the supporting cast,, although it’s clear maybe they were never supporting cast.. we just didn’t know their part yet..

I think what shines for me is the clear and steady development of the plot.. while the reader is left guessing as much as the characters as to what will happen next, it’s clear the author has taken the time to plan events and is working up to something big.. while the story progresses we are treated to a rich and wonderful world and events, mixed perfectly with character development.

Days of Fury starts strong giving us the background of someone we think is a new character and quickly sets the tone of the book. While the first book in the series was about finding a place in the new world, the second about survival.. the third for me is emotional development as the each character comes to terms with not only the event of the vanishing and the horrible monsters.. but learning to face the prospect that not everyone left alive is a good person, and for some the vanishing has brought out the worst in them…which side of the coin are they on..good or bad.

It’s a wonderful instalment that truly solidifies the series with the reader. With so much action you need to keep the readers focus right where you want it and Andrew Masseurs certainly does that. The post-apocalyptic world he’s created is immensely breathtaking and I can only see things going from strength to strength.

Oh and not to spoil things but if you like a few twists and turns.. yeah this is for you!

Easy 5* and I’m ready for book 4

Now the most exciting part of this post! Andrew Masseurs kindly took the time to answer some of my burning questions. Let me know what you think.

Q: The “A Day in the Life Series” seems to have grown at pace. Has the series been something you’ve been working on for a while?

The A Day in the Life series has certainly grown in pace this year (2024) With three books added to the series. There was a break as I wrote book one four years ago. In 2022 and 23 I wrote two unreleased novels in different genres. Coming back to the series in early 24 was like coming home. I wrote The Day After very quickly. I had the first draft done in a month. Then proceeded to edit it over the next two. Days of Fury book three took a little longer as I needed to be very careful with timelines while keeping rhythms and pacing. The Uncles of the Apocalypse came out of nowhere and I can’t even remember writing it. It was like being on a plane ride where you’ve slept through most of it and find you’ve suddenly arrived at your destination. The series will be slowing down as I’ve started to explore audiobooks. Book One was narrated brilliantly by David Piper. I’ve spent the last few months learning the trade of audiobook engineering. I released the first version of The Day After as an inexperienced audiobook journeyman. I ‘ve gained immense respect for the art of the audiobook and I’m redoing a second version of The Day After. I’ve got a better microphone. I’ve set up an acoustic treated room. I’ve learnt as much as I can about editing and recording. The second version of The Day After (reloaded) will be coming out very soon. I will then go back and redo Book One A Day in the Life myself to keep the narration the same throughout the series and record Days of Fury book three and The Uncles of the Apocalypse. I’d imagine all of this will take four to five months or more as its working, recording and editing while trying to work as well as having family time.  Each hour of recording for me takes around four to five hours of editing. It’s a bit nuts really but I’m hoping will be well worth it for the listener. So, the fifth book in the series will be coming out probably later in 2025. I really want that book to be something special.

Q: Where did the inspiration for the series come from?

A love of the apocalypse. I remember watching The Quiet Earth when I was twelve and just loving the opening scene where the main actor wakes up and everyone is gone. I Am Legend is also a favourite and I love the novel version by Richard Matheson. I started writing book one A Day in the Life while on holiday. I couldn’t get into the book I was reading and so started writing a novel about what was happening on holiday. I really had no idea what the story was about. I was as surprised as anyone when I wrote the line, and now they are all gone. Suddenly, the novella became about the disappearance of everyone. Then I had monsters appearing. I was scrambling to find the answers myself. Who would have thought it I’d still be writing four books into the series.

Q: In your time as an author so far have you had to learn any hard lessons with publishing?

Many. The first book was originally published. I found myself doing most of the marketing. After researching the role of being self-published I discovered it is not unusual and a lot of self-published authors are doing extremely well. My former self from four years ago would not recognise the person I’ve become. Writing my drafts. Getting them edited. Formatting the novel myself. Finding artists. Trying to create the best possible version of the novel possible and now audiobooks. The hardest lesson is basically that you must sell yourself. Marketing is everything. No one will know you or your books if you don’t sell the book. Its tough. But you must do it. Sale, sale, sale. If you can’t do it, then you’re in the wrong business.  I’ve reached thousands of people with my series and I’m hoping that will become hundreds of thousands. Keep on moving, keep on moving.

Q: What motivates you to keeping writing? I mean, what keeps it exciting?

For me it’s always about having fun. I know when it’s working cause then it doesn’t feel like work. I try to keep each next book fresh. I try not to follow the same ideas. I try to keep away from repeating what worked in the last book. For me as a reader and a writer I want to be surprised. I want to be kept guessing. As a lover of novels and movies I personally always enjoy something that is new. Something that has never been done before. This is getting harder and harder to do. Especially with the explosion of streaming these days. How can you come up with something that has never done before? I try to keep it unique. I try to stay in my lane. I try to keep it as Kiwi as possible. I try to laugh and not take myself to seriously and number one I try to have fun. As a result, whether it be creating an audiobook or writing a novel I’m always looking for the next mountain to climb. I’m loving the journey. I also have grown so fond of all the characters I feel like I owe them. I feel a personal obligation to write something that grows them all. I plant a seed and help it grow.

Q: What made you decide to release book 4 so quickly after book 3?

Days of Fury book three was finished halfway through the year. There were several reasons as to why it came out the same time as book four. One, was I lost my original artist.  He had disappeared down a rabbit hole and was unable to be contacted. I spent two to three months trying to find an artist who could possibly compare. I luckily came across Saber who arguably has created something comparable as well as taking it to another level. It’s funny some people love the artwork of book one and two. Some love the artwork of books three and four. I love both. The other reason was The Uncles book four was finished by the time I had the artwork for books three and four. I also felt that Days of Fury book three was a dark read. It explains a lot of what was unexplained in The Day After book two. It also introduces a new character in Tony. I had to take a cleansing shower after writing his part in the whole story. After finishing the book, I didn’t want to leave the reader with book three left in their minds. I also wanted the reader to have a bit of a thrill ride for coming with me this far. I paid them back with the roller coaster ride that is The Uncles of the Apocalypse. Probably my favourite book in the whole series so far.

Q: How do you celebrate when you finish a book and it’s published? Is it nerve racking wait for the first sale/review?

How do I celebrate? I don’t think I ever have. Is a book ever really finished? Once I’ve finished a book and have it published, I’m normally juggling writing the next one as well doing the audiobook for the previous one.  Theres never really a time to take your foot off the accelerator. As soon as the book is published then its time to market it. With reviews. I think I was nervous with the first book. I didn’t know what to expect. As times moved on, I make sure I’m happy first and try not to think about it. I think I will celebrate when the whole series is finished and take a break…maybe.

Q: Do you read a lot yourself? If so what have you been reading or what is your go to genre?

I’m reading and listening to stories more then ever. I listen to audiobooks and have grown quite a collection from established artists to indie authors. I tend to have a soft spot for thrillers and horror but love any genre if the story is original and riveting. I love a good scare. I’ve always loved movies. These days there’s so much noise I tend to get more enjoyment out of writing.

Q: Other than writing what else do you enjoy? Music?

Family is number one. I love hanging out with my wife and kids. They are all characters who make each day special. I have two dogs and two cats. The dogs I love. The cats I have a love / hate relationship with. They are very demanding. Feed me! I spent over twenty years making music. It put me in good stead for the work ethic needed to be an author. I love writing and making songs. After doing it for most of my life it was a nice change to jump ships. Though, they are both extremely similar veins. I find writing is all about rhythms. Much like music. I try not to think while I’m creating music. I try to feel. Writing is the same thing. Get lost in the story and the story will take care of itself. My best songs were created quickly without overthinking. I’m finding the same thing with writing. I love to exercise though finding the time has become harder and harder.

Q:Reviews are clearly important to readers and authors alike, but we all know sometimes reviews can also be unhelpful. How do you handle negative reviews?

Coming from the music world I’d already built some what of a tough hide. In this day and age and with social media and the ability for someone to cut you down in a sentence its extremely tough. But it comes with being a creative. It’s part of the territory. I try to make something that I love. If I love it, then I hope someone else will get enjoyment out of it. That’s all I can hope for. With the positive will always come the negative. You can’t please everyone and if you try, you’ll probably end up not pleasing anyone.

Anthony Hopkins once said, “what other people think is none of my business.”  I like that. It is none of my business. I just must back myself and put the art out there with the thought that I hope you enjoy the book and find it an enjoyable read for the time you’ve given up for it.

Q. I really need to know… What’s next? More books, I hope. You seem to have found your niche, would you ever look at writing a different genre?

I’m sixty pages into book five. I’m creating the audiobooks for the first four books in the series. Once book five is finished I feel a war coming on. It could be two to three more books. A large finale to the whole series. I can feel it. I can sense it. The family will be at the heart of it. The results could be catastrophic or satisfying. I’m not sure yet. All I know is it will be epic. The world around is also changing. I can’t wait to write inside it.  Once the series is finished, I’m not sure what will happen next. Could it be books on characters inside the world? Could it be a stand alone novel? Could it be another series on a different idea? My current ideas for the books are always changing as I write so I can’t say. But yes, there will be plenty more books!

I hope you enjoyed the Q&A and my thanks go to Andrew Masseurs for being so willing to answer my questions ha ha.
