BLOG TOUR – Death Notice (Michael Walker Thrillers Book 2) by Simon Maltman

Today Is my turn on the blog tour for Death Notice by Simon Maltman.

It was a no brainer me signing up for the tour as I’d just finished reading the book when the chance came up.. what better way to share my thoughts than via a blog tour!

Review

We are back with Michael Walker, former IRA, turned MI5 informer. When last we seen Walker all hell had broken loose when his old IRA buddies had located him and were out to get payback for him turning informant. It was a wild ride that saw Walker team up with unlikely friends Brandon and Amy.

You don’t necessarily need to have read the first instalment to understand the dynamic as the author does a brilliant job of adding detail when needed to help new readers quickly understand the history between them but it does add more depth in my opinion.

This time it’s Amy who needs help. Her cousin has gone missing and the police aren’t really helping..it’s time for Brandon and Walker to pack their bags.. drive over.. and hopefully figure out what’s happened.

In this small town the welcomes are few and far between and Walker is quick to get himself mixed up in all sorts of fights but just when he thinks he’s getting into the case he gets a call out of the blue… his old MI5 handler.. Walker’s father is in hospital.

It’s with a heavy heart our duo pause their progress and head to Walker’s old home to face his past.. lets just say theirs not many happy to see his face and it’s a risk going as he’s still got a target on his back. Will the reunion with his family go well? Ha.. no chance..and I wasn’t sure they would make it back in one piece.

Back in Six Mile it’s clear that a number of people have gone missing.. but why hadn’t anyone joined the dots?

Either way Walker isn’t going to stand by and let anyone else die… the issue is trouble seems to follow him and he can’t control everything. Can he stop the killer?

After the first instalment I was eager to see where the author would take the series next and I loved how he’s made this little team ready to support each other when needed.

The plot was certainly gripping and I loved the changing perspectives and the misdirection added. Until later in the book it’s really hard to pinpoint who the killer is..there’s too many suspects with their own motivations and it takes time of Walker to put the pieces together but when he does.. boy it’s explosive.

I felt the plot was a smart one, not only was it amazing but it also perfectly allowed for the natural flow of development of the character, building on the previous novel, reinforcing the connections between them.

Looking back at the notes I made when reading their were a couple pivotal scenes. I can’t say too much for one.. but lets just say a bullet hits home and it rocks the reader emotionally. The other was the authors sheer love of music and how he manages to integrate this into the tale, expertly using it to build the connection between Walker and Brandon. These moments really added the extra wow and depth I love, the characters feel real and you start to love the friendship they have.

Death Notice is certainly hard hitting, it’s a thriller for sure but it’s got something else too it..it’s the development of walker.. it doesn’t take anything away from the main plot, if anything it just makes the story even more exciting to read.

Today I’m reviewing Moriarty (Sherlock Holmes Novel Book 2) by Anthony Horowitz.

FYI.. while prepping for this review I’ve noticed I bought a kindle copy of the book and the paperback without noticing… must plan better David.. must plan better ha ha.

Sherlock Holmes is dead…he fell to his doom along with his nemesis Moriarty.. but there’s a lasting legacy both will leave.

With Moriarty gone there’s a power vacuum waiting to be filled and the people who plan to take over are even more ruthless..

Pinkerton agent Fredrick Chase and Inspector Athelney Jones meet and quickly decide to join forces when a clue is found that links Moriarty to this new threat.. and a chance to meet this new enemy face to face…but with Moriarty gone how will they pull this off?

It’s a chance they can’t miss though, and this meeting sets them on a course where either they will succeed.. or they may die trying..these new criminals are ruthless.

Chase and Jones become partners that at times reminded me of Sherlock and Watson, Jones has a fascination with Sherlock which means he’s picked up a few skills… but will his judgement be spot on.. or will his prey stay one step ahead?

It’s a complex case, with lots of moving parts.. the question is can Chase and Jones put the pieces together.

The plot certainly had that Sherlock feel but with an extra kick.. the excitement of actually not knowing if the main characters would make it out alive was palpable.

There’s twists and turns along the way that really hook you in but what I really enjoyed was the earth shattering ending…. I mean.. I can’t, and won’t spoil it but I had to read one sentence about 5 times just to ensure my eyes weren’t failing me…

Moriarty had everything I expected and sooooo much more. Very clever plot from Anthony Horowitz.

Review

Knock Knock is a twisted and gruesome tale of murder.. the victims of this psychopath tortured.. choked with a metal ball.

Natasha Mayston innocently opens the door one night.. little does she know it’s for the last time.. there’s something familiar about this person.. but it doesn’t matter.. it’s too late..

The killer has only just started.. but what’s the end game?

Detective Dan Lockhart is assigned to the case and quickly sees similarities to a previous murder, but that case is solved.. and a man is being held for the crime.. so are they linked? And if so what does it mean.. is the man behind bars innocent?

It’s not going to be easy for Lockhart either as the killer is smart, methodical slightly.. evidence isn’t going to easy to find.

Lockhart has an ace up his sleeve he hopes in psychologist Dr Lexi Green. Lockhart has being visiting Green for his own personal reason for trauma suffered years ago and believes Green can help.. but is there more to it than that?

As the bodies pile up the pressure mounts.. evidence is either hard to find or doesn’t make sense when mixed with the persons of interest and alibis… it’s a real puzzle and Lockhart doesn’t have all the pieces on the board yet. It’s not really a twist and turn tale.. rather misdirection.. thanks to the killer the reader is left wondering which suspect it could really be..or is it someone else the police haven’t yet identified?

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Lockhart and Green who are clearly the main characters from the off.. there’s something deeper between them and their growing connection is what gives them depth.. they second guess themselves and their motivations which really gave it a sense of realness. A lot of time is given to the development of these two which is a great setup for the series.

The work relationships within Lockhart’s team too really gave the story extra depth and feeling, the ensemble cast brought to life. Each one had their own personality that developed as the tale went on and you could really see and understand their motivations, their place in not only the team but the overall story too.

Now the plot… wow.. the pace was super on point but what really gave the plot the wow factor was the method of killing.. and the reasons behind it. It really felt like the author must have put some real time and effort into the plot to create such a pivotal character who has so few words.. for the killer “less is more” really worked well and as the team delve into possible reasons behind the murders it just adds to his character and the overall creepiness of the story.

I picked this up recently due to a amazon kindle deal and I’m super glad I did… I’ve already downloaded the next book in the series as I’m keen to see what happens next as while you get closure there’s still some things left open which I felt was super clever of the author… it allows the easy flow into the next book and for readers like myself.. it’s the worm on the hook…I took the bait.

What a harrowingly beautiful tale The Solitary Sparrow is..

Meg suffers again and again in life but her strength.. her courage is unparalleled!

Born with a defect was hard enough for Meg but given the time period the fact she’s female also goes against her… it’s a mans world but Meg very much knows her worth and she’s not afraid to show it when it matters.

During her young life she suffers both mental and physical abuse which at time was difficult to swallow as a reader.. the pain the poor girl went through.

Luck is on her side though when during a difficult birth Meg is noticed by surgeon, William of Oxford. William wants nothing more than a new assistant but he gets much more than he bargained for.. he wants her for nothing more than her womanly instincts and to put his clients at ease but Meg won’t just stand by and do what she’s told.. she wants to learn everything.. she knows she can do anything the surgeon can if given the time and training.

Meg will get what she wants but it won’t be easy as there’s resistance with every step she takes, and some obstacles are easier to navigate than others.

I didn’t know quite what to expect with this one..it’s impossible to impart how much pain this girl goes through but Meg shines bright while breaking down all barriers in her way.

To say it was an emotional journey is an understatement.. but I’m glad I went on it. Tracy Russell did a fantastic job bringing the story to life with her tone, which weaved perfectly within the story.. I could have listened to Tracy tell Meg’s tale a thousand times over.

It’s magnificently agonising in it’s plot, you will love it but at the same time it will leave a small part of Meg with you forever..I don’t think I’ve ever said it about a character before but I’m fully in awe of Meg.

To say it’s a 5* smash hit doesn’t really do it justice.. it’s a 5* masterpiece.

My thanks go to the author, Atmosphere Press and Rachel’s Random Resources for having me on the tour. I’ll definitely be recommending this to friends and family and can already see if few purchases on the horizon.

Review

Apprehensive was the word starting this next instalment in The Brunanburh Series… not because I’ve not enjoyed the series immensely so far.. no I’m just gutted this is the last in the series.. I know there’s only a finite number of pages that could be written but MJ Porter has really made these characters come to life and I just wish we could have more..

Edmund returns home after coming to an accord with Anlaf Sihtricson but if we’ve learnt anything about the period and the King’s in play at the time we all know peace won’t last.

For each power In play it’s a chess game, trying to second guess what the other will do, wondering which way they should align themselves… or do they wait it out?

Something I really enjoyed was that the narrative switched between the characters effortlessly. I can’t imagine the time taken by the author to put everything in order but the flow was perfect and the change in focus so suitable you can’t help but be absorbed into the tale.

The story is rich in detail, depicting the time.. the connections..the infighting and plotting..it’s all there.

For me the star is, and always has been Constantin, now former King ot the Scots. Kings of Conflict solidifies his shrewdness and his place in history… I won’t spoil it but wow.. what a man he must have been.

What really shines through is the research and time the author has clearly put into the tale, and it’s so expertly woven that it brings history to life.. credit where credits due.. it’s a talent to make a subject exciting and while I know with historic fiction there’s some leeway with events and characters etc but they are based around known facts.. and to use those facts.. and to be able to weave such a wonderful engrossing series..wow.. it’s a masterclass in historical fiction writing and further cements MJ Porter’s as one of, if not thee best, historical fiction writer out there!

Throughout the final instalment the tension mounts and the pace meant it perfectly mirrored the tension rising within myself as events played out.. the excitement growing with each page turn.

To create such a wonderful series, with such a plethora of characters, and egos.. utterly astounding it’s so perfect.

Today I’m reviewing Severed by Simon Kernick.

Tyler awakes to a gruesome sight.. he’s no memory of what happened but things quickly escalate when a DVD shows Tyler committing murder.. he’s murdered his girlfriend no less.

He’s left with no choice but to do as commanded if he wants the video and the body to disappear..

Tyler needs time to figure out what is going on… he couldn’t have done what the video suggested… but he saw it with his own eyes!!

Someone videoed the murder and they hold all the cards..with no recourse coming to mind he sets out to do as commanded.. pick up a briefcase.

Things quick get out of hand as the first piece in the puzzle is brought into play… and it’s a blast from the past..

More bodies son hit the floor and Tyler knows there’s only one man he can trust.. an old friend.. but does he really want to put him in danger…and does he really have a choice?

What plays out is a complex mind game as Tyler battles to say alive whilst also calculating all the different equations going on in his head.. somethings not right here.. does he know who’s behind this? Why him after all?

The plot involves a lot of action and intrigue..the twists and turns… like Tyler the reader is left in a haze trying to figure out just why he’s ended up where he is.. but one things for sure.. Tyler won’t go down without a fight.

A solid 4*, easy to read and get engrossed in.. like Tyler I couldn’t stop until I knew who was behind things.. and why.

Where to start! It feels so good to have another Ryker story. Fans of the author will know the roots of James Ryker, an intelligence agent whose had more than his fair share of trauma in his life… but guys like Ryker only give up when their dead.

The story starts on what seems like a simple mission for Ryker but nothing is ever that simple in Ryker’s world… A surveillance mission turns to kidnap..and worse.. but why?

To ramp up the pressure Ryker is also feeling watched…paranoid.. it’s always good in Ryker’s line of work to trust your gut sometimes…or is he just getting too old for the game? and there’s not just bad guys to watch for now…he’s on home soil.. everyone has a camera these days so he needs to make sure he keeps a low profile.

Ryker goes out on the limb to find out who is behind the kidnapping and why, and the JIA who he works for aren’t the only ones looking to track him down after he kind of goes rogue, all the letters are after him..MI5, MI6 you name it..he’s pissed them off somehow.

To top off the pressure a close acquaintance of Ryker’s goes missing. This friend has a strong connection to Ryker and let’s be fair, not many can call Ryker a friend and stay alive for long.

The puzzle pieces explode in this action packed story as Ryker painstakingly puts things together. It’s gruesome and awesome at the same time..

It’s another cracking read in the life of James Ryker by the author who is a wizard with the wordplay, the flow is so bloody good I found myself reading at midnight, hours had gone by without me noticing.

The Renegade can certainly be read as a standalone if you are new to the author, credit where credits due to the author on that. His plot lines are so easy to follow it’s effortless to jump in whilst at the same time it’s clear to see how much time and attention the author has clearly put into the story to make it flow so easily.. it just suck you in.

For me it was great to be back with Ryker but the addition of Moreno blew my mind, I honestly didn’t think we would see her again and what a comeback!

The writing is a pure joy to read and I love how I drifted off reminiscing about other Ryker adventures along the way!

It’s a brilliant addition to the series for an established character, fans will love it.. quite honestly everyone will love it.

Review

The main issue with a long running series is how do you keep things fresh and engage with the readers time and time again.. Well Rob Sinclair certainly has the magic formula as we are back with James Ryker for his 5^th instalment which for me is quite honestly the best yet.. the series just gets better and better!

The White Scorpion starts with an explosive prologue.. Ryker is on a mission and things have went south once again! it’s not just his life on the line either as he’s got a team backing him up on this one. At first it seems like a simple hostage exchange.. but nothing is simply in Ryker’s world.

After that blood pumping start we are catapulted 3 weeks previous to learn of the events leading up to the hostage exchange and we see Ryker slowly sucked back into the life he so desperately wished to leave behind.. but he knows deep down this is where he belongs, he just wants to do things on his terms with full disclosure… its more than a job to him.. this is his life.

Peter Winter is back as Ryker’s handler and for me I loved his development in this tale as he really gets his hands dirty.

Ryker is sent to Chabon under the guise of him being part of an elite security team.. not far from the truth, but he’s got another mission too!

We get the usual spy craft we’ve come to love of Ryker, sneaking around trying to obtain data, playing his cards close to his chest not only to keep himself safe but everyone else too.. he doesn’t know who is trustworthy…

The plot develops quickly as the risk of civil war increases with every turn of the page.. you never know if someone is good or bad.. or in Ryker’s world, bad or really bad.. Can Ryker stop this before things go too far?

There’re quite a few twists along the way, things that certainly have that wow factor.. let’s just say not everyone is being truthful with Ryker and he’s not going to stand for that once he finds out.

Action packed would be an understatement.. brutal and thrilling just wouldn’t do this book justice…outrageously perfect is the only way to describe this one!

If you like you action thrillers or spy novels this is certainly a must have book for the collection!

Today I’m reviewing the audiobook version of A Forest of Vanity and Valour: The Levanthria Series by A.P Beswick narrated by Aaron Smith.

I’ve been following the author on social media for a while but have never got around to giving one of his books a go until now..Not that I didn’t want too.. there’s just so much choice and so little time ha.

Anyway I picked up the audio version of the book as a lift gift for signing up to the authors mailing list..via the BookFunnel app (Side note… how decent is the BookFunnel app?? I’ve used the site before but never new they had an app… very happy indeed and its really bloody decent)

Anyhooo.. after signing up to the mailing list I found I already had the book in my TBR list.. bought back in March 2023.. reading and buying books are different hobbies for me ha ha.

All the signs were there so it was about time to give the book a go.. and I’m glad I did.. from the authors socials it was a sold as an epic fantasy with a robin hood kind of edge… let’s see shall we..

Review

Vireo and his friends collect money for the King.. it’s not a great job but it keeps them in the life style they are accustomed too..and no one wants to be at the bottom of the ladder do they. It doesn’t make them popular.. if anything it leads to a few scuffles that could be avoided.

There’s a war going on and the King needs money.. and that means increased taxes. This isn’t going to go down well.

This world has magic, although it’s outlawed. With the war effort going badly it’s time to embrace magic again.

Vireo is on the pulse and has a book that may help!

We soon learn of a secret affair Vireo is having with a nobles wife.. this noble happens to be the person in charge of keeping the money and men flowing to the King so when he learns of the betrayal he’s not going to let this go lightly..

What makes it interesting is its hard to know what actions are carried out by the man himself.. there’s something else going on.. but what?

Not to spoil things but after an harrowing act that rocks Vireo to the core he’s on the run with his pals..but the only place they can hide is the forest.. a forest full of magic, the downside is there’s creatures that live there that could rip a person to pieces.

As Vireo sets out to make a camp of sorts this band of comrades soon learn of the dangers of the forest but there’s luck on Vireo’s side.. and a prior kindness pays off big time.

This is where the story starts to have the robin hood vibe.. but it’s amplified with the epic fantasy punch as we see the men try to forge a life.. to survive.. but they have to deal with actions and the ramifications for the people as they continue to be punished with high taxes.

Things come to a head and a battle is the only outcome.. someone must die..but who will make it out alive.. and who is really the bad guy in this tale? There’s a lot hidden..like we are only touching the surface.

Overall it’s a resounding hit.. but Aaron Smith’s tone and pace is what make the audio version an full on 5* story. I love a good audio book but sometimes struggle to maintain focus as my eyes are always looking elsewhere.. but not so with A Forest of Vanity and Valour.. my attention was focused from the first chapter.. Smith has a commanding presence which hooks you in.

I’ve already used this months audible membership credit to get the next book in the series and I’m keen to get started.

Today I’m taking part in the series blog tour for The James Ryker Series by Rob Sinclair… kicking off with a review of The Green Viper.

Review

I’ve been a fan of the author the last couple of years or so. I came to his books a bit late but quickly devoured them. Each tale was gripping from start to finish and I had high hopes for The Green Viper.

The Green Viper once again demonstrates the author’s ability to write a heart thumbing thriller. By now you’d think the author would have run out of steam perhaps..where else can he go with the character? Well let me tell you he’s wrote a cracker again!

As with the previous tales in the Ryker series things are personal. The events he gets sucked into are out of his control largely but let’s be honest..He’s a magnet for danger!

A message with links to Ryker’s past sets the wheels in motion on a tense thriller full of suspense. It’s the buildup of the plot that really hooks you in..never quite knowing what will happen next.

Now, not to give the plot of the story away too much Ryker is enlisted to help get someone out of danger..but this individual just can’t see the danger he’s in..or he’s just ignorant to it.

Ryker has his work cut out for him thats for sure and there’s multiple players in the dangerous game; Ryker needs to find out what their interest Is so he can anticipate their next move (easier said than done).

Will he make it out alive? Come on you already know the answer don’t you.. lets just say though Ryker will be haunted by this mission..he struggles to let go of the past and this will certainly eat away at him I’m sure..he needs an outlet for his frustrations and his ex boss may just be able to help.. lets see what the future holds..

A super tense thriller, the plot is great and I loved how it developed. The multiple angles the story was approached from kept me engaged and thoroughly excited to the very last page!
