BLOG TOUR – The Wrong Woman by O. J. Mullen

Today I’m reviewing The Wrong Woman by O. J. Mullen

Here’s the blurb

Everyone has secrets. Are yours worth dying for?

Julia Sutherland isn’t too sure about her new colleague. Ellis Kirkbride is friendly, charismatic and handsome, but there’s just something about him – a bit too slick, a bit too confident, and he stands a bit too close. Normally she’d share her concerns with her husband Rob, but he’s been distant lately and Julia has a secret he mustn’t find out.

Ellis Kirkbride thought he had found the right woman. She was everything he could want but she didn’t want him. And that was unacceptable…

In a tale of twisted love and chilling revenge, bestseller O.J. Mullen will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. Perfect for fans of K. L Slater, Claire Douglas and Sue Watson.

Review

This book keeps you on your toes from the first page to the last. Starting strong depicting a family falling apart.. it sets the tione perfectly and leaves the reader with questions instantly.. needing to know more.

We then meet Julia, she’s successful at the her job and has a loving husband.. but that’s it.. she doesn’t have the life she hoped, that they both hoped for, which has led to tension but overall she’s happy.. life could be worse.

Her husband Rob works too hard.. late nights.. sometimes they are like passing ships in the night.

In walks Ellis Kirkbride, he’s smart… but what’s his game? He’s got one hell of a backstory that he brings with him… but how much of the story he tells Julia is true?

I feel the author got the pace spot on, it’s deliberate, methodical and builds the tension.. by around 30% in I was wondering what could possibly happen next as you can see the pressure building, and there’s so many possibilities…but even more exciting is that more than one character has secrets to hide.

The Wrong Woman is most certainly one of the best psychological thrillers I’ve read but it’s more than that, there’s real emotion put into the character development, you can see them face their own battles with lust.. and loose..

The story is told from multiple points of view but as the story progresses you can see some characters are open and honest, while some even seem to lie to themselves to justify their actions. This style meant it was easy to read and sucked in as you didn’t get too bogged down in one character, everything is kept fresh and exciting but also treated the reader to development that was intense!

I can’t spoil it but from the synopsis you’d think you’ve a good idea of what is going to happen yes? Ellis sets his sights on Julia whose husband is a workaholic… prime target yeah? Oh how little you know… there’s so much packed into The Wrong Woman by Owen Mullen.

While the synopsis certainly hooks you in… it’s only part of the story… and that’s the point.. hook you in then Owen Mullen gives you a masterclass in potent psychological mind play!

5/5 Stars

The Moaning of Life The Worldly Wisdom of Karl Pilkington

Today I’m reviewing The Moaning of Life The Worldly Wisdom of Karl Pilkington.

Yes yes I hear some cry.. this book came out in 2014..but I really want my blog to be a true reflection of my reading journey and to share my love of books…and great books are timeless 😊

Here’s the blurb

Left to his own devices, Karl Pilkington would be happy with his life just as it is. But now he’s hit forty, everyone keeps asking him why he’s so reluctant to marry his girlfriend and why he doesn’t want to have kids. It’s time for Karl to face up to the biggest question of the lot – what does it all mean? Karl thought he’d seen it all filming An Idiot Abroad, but now he’s off around the globe to learn how other cultures deal with life’s big issues. Find out how Karl copes as he . . .

– Has plastic surgery in LA

– Models for a Japanese life drawing class

– Helps deliver a baby in Bali

Have his experiences changed him? Find out in this hilarious new book.

Review

The Moaning of Life follows Karl on his journey looking into Marriage, Kids, Vocation & Money, Happiness and Death.

I picked the book up, not when I was in slump so to speak but I needed something different.. something humorous.. something more real than my typical genere.

We travel with Karl as he heads around the world looking into different customs and views of life, giving the reader his typical humour and wit that we’ve come to know and love.

This is a book you’ll pick up if you’ve seen anything of Karl’s before for sure but if for any reason if you are unfamiliar you might be wondering who Karl is.. or why should you get the book. Well Karl has become well known to many for being the butt of many a joke for Ricky Gervais and has had some decent shows on TV, this book being a supporting novel.. but what’s his attraction? Quite simply he’s humorously blunt. He speaks as he sees and many resonate with his thoughts.

The book itself is broken up into easy sections, plenty of visual breaks and the odd picture thrown in, each perfectly designed to aid the flow for the reader and it works perfectly.

As a supporting book for the TV show I can’t really comment too much as I never actually watched it… I’m not a massive tv fan any longer but what I can say is that I don’t think I’ve missed anything.. the book has it all! The detail and descriptions are super informative, and I very much enjoyed it!

Karl is so funny with his bluntness and for that reason I’ll give it a 4*

To find out more head to Goodreads or Amazon (or visit any local 2nd hand bookseller, it’s worth grabbing a copy)

BLOG TOUR – Dark Frontier by Matthew Harffy

Today is my turn on the blog tour for Fark Frontier by Matthew Harffy.

Here’s the blurb

A thrilling historical western set in 1890s Oregon, from the author of the critically acclaimed Bernicia Chronicles. An English soldier turned policeman escapes to the American West for a new future, but life on the frontier proves far harder than he ever imagined…

A man can flee from everything but his own nature.

1890. Lieutenant Gabriel Stokes of the British Army left behind the horrors of war in Afghanistan for a role in the Metropolitan Police. Though he rose quickly through the ranks, the squalid violence of London’s East End proved just as dark and oppressive as the battlefield.

With his life falling apart, and longing for peace and meaning, Gabriel leaves the grime of London behind and heads for the wilderness and wide open spaces of the American West.

He soon realises that the wilds of Oregon are far from the idyll he has yearned for. The Blue Mountains may be beautiful, but with the frontier a complex patchwork of feuds and felonies, and ranchers as vicious as any back alley cut-throat in London, Gabriel finds himself unable to escape his past and the demons that drive him. Can he find a place for himself on the far edge of the New World?

Review

Dark Frontier is a change in setting/period for Matthew Harffy who has established himself as one of the best historical fiction writers out there.. so what’s the new offering about you may ask..Well the latest treat for us readers is a western adventure that packs a punch!

Word of warning.. I’ll try to keep this spoiler free but there’s only so much I can tell you so…..

Lieutenant Gabriel Stokes leaves England behind to escape his past.. he’s running away from his daemons, but you can only run so long before things will catch up with you.

Stokes heads to Oregon to meet his friend John who owns and runs Thornford Ranch. As soon as he steps off the train the action starts.. there’s a commotion and the first body hits the floor courtesy of Jed White.

Things spiral kind of fast for Stokes now as we learn about Jed, who was actually sent to collect Stokes.. but where is his friend John.. and why did Jed just shoot this young man?

Now I’ll try and remain spoiler free as much as I can but from the off Stokes is knocked for six and his whole purpose/lookout changes… I’m not sure he really knew what he was expecting at Thornford Ranch but what he’s thrown into is beyond anything he would have thought possible and he quickly finds himself sucked into a protective role.. he can’t just walk away..

We learn of a town under the thumb of very influential people, and eyes and ears are everywhere…this place is more dangerous than London even.. the law doesn’t really have any power here… it’s those with connections that hold the power.

To say it’s a typical western wouldn’t do the story justice but it does have some things you’d expect such as the gun fights which really added an edge of excitement. I particularly liked the detail added to explain the weapons, range, kick back and such..wow.

Some would say the author took a risk moving away from his well established work.. I say he’s killed it! What was clear from the off was the detail added not only to give you that true western feel but also the wider story of Stokes, London, his reasons for being in Oregon.. it adds more depth to the tale and for me would help the flow for someone who may not consider a western their genre, the detail just gave it that polished edge knowing how much time had gone into the background of the plot but perfectly added the gruffness I’d expect of a western tale!

Stokes is the main character and by far the most developed due to this but I can’t even start to explain how well developed his character is… he’s got his issues and he’s fighting them, you can tell he’s honourable.. but at the same time has weaknesses like we all do..

I particularly found him funny in those moments when a pretty face would turn his head only for him to overreach and old wounds opened so to speak.. these moments were lighthearted at times but at others pivotal showing what kind of man Stokes is and the length’s he will go to for what he believes is right.

Engrossing.. mesmerizing…. however you want to say it this book has the wow factor from the off, the plot sucks you in.

I don’t think I’ve seen such a well-developed ensemble cast either, even down to the shop keepers.. their mannerisms/style just melted through the pages and each added something to the flow and direction of the story.

If I had to pick a word that describes the feel of the book best it would be authentic.. it has everything I expect of a western.. but here’s the thing.. it goes beyond that, transcends what you expect and delivers even more of a punch.

Grab a beer, whiskey or even a sarsaparilla and enjoy!.

I really wish I could write some spoilers but that’s not me.. but trust me.. it’s git everything a reader could ask for!

A wonderous 5* read.

My thanks go to Andrew @ HeadofZeus for arranging the tour and for inviting me. I was grateful for the copy of the book to aid my timely review but I purchased a kindle copy too. Harffy gets no free rides with me… but continues to amaze me so it’s well worth grabbing a copy!

Sword of the Saxons (Alfred the Great Book 2) by Steven A. McKay – REVIEW

Today I’m reviewing Sword of the Saxons (Alfred the Great Book 2) by Steven A. McKay!

Here’s the blurb.

Betrayed by his kinsmen, his forces overrun by Danes, King Alfred of Wessex has retreated deep into the marshes of his homeland, lying in wait for his chance at redemption.

The scourge of the heathen horde that has ravaged the kingdom for decades is at its peak. Led by the fearsome Viking warlord Guthrum, the fate of the men, women, and children at their mercy appears all but sealed. But underestimate the great king at your peril…

Gathering allies and bannermen to his cause, and building a strategy that will hopefully ensure victory, Alfred sets out to undermine the strength of the complacent invaders, and establish Wessex as the greatest territory in the British Isles.

A final showdown awaits. Not only with Guthrum and his savage warriors, but with destiny. As the battle lines are drawn, the destiny of not just Wessex, but of every Anglo-Saxon in Britain, rests firmly on Alfred’s shoulders.

An utterly ferocious and gripping adventure, covering the fascinating middle years of Alfred the Great’s reign, one of Britain’s most influential monarchs.

Review

I feel like Alfred the Great is one of those people we’ve probably all heard of.. but know really little about and it was just waiting for the right person to ignite the passion in a story about the man and McKay certainly knows how to do that with a bang!

Firstly, don’t worry If you’ve not had chance to read the first book in the series.. while I’m of course going to tell you to grab a copy it’s most certainly not needed to understand the tale and characters as the author does a outstanding job of laying the foundations of the tale and building as he goes, everything fits perfect so just when you want a bit of background on a character and their motivations etc it’s there.. so beautifully woven it’s almost effortless to read.

Alfred has been defeated and betrayed but he’s not out of the fight yet.. it’s time for Alfred to shine. Where book 1 dealt with Alfred’s rise and fall from power book2 deals with the fall out, and most importantly his personal growth as he tries to maintain but also grow his support to take back the land from the Dane invaders!

What I really loved was while there’s more than enough action for the fans it’s tempered with a more personal side as we see him struggle with his own health, those of his friends, guilt at the cost of war and most importantly to him.. wishing to keep his family safe. It’s a perilous time but I loved the human touch given to Alfred with those special moments with his family. Those pages really made you understand that being King isn’t always a good thing.. sometimes it’s clear being born into royalty could have been seen as a curse.. power and fame yes.. but the pressure.. the utter fear of betrayal or worse death.. yeah no thanks.

Alfred soon sets about attacking the Danes in hit and run attacks.. bringing them down little by little. For him and his men this is quite fun actually and you can feel the excitement they feel enacting revenge on the invaders.

The Danes won’t sit by for too long though and it’s a race for Alfred to complete his new fortress before the Danes mount their attack.

I’ll try to write as spoiler free as I can but this Is where the tale really gets juicy.

As Alfred’s power grows and the Danes are chased from his land we see the compassion the King has, allowing conversion to Christianity rather than death. It’s a pivotal moment for Alfred and shows what kind of man he is.

The decision is costly.. it does work but at the same time Alfred is blind to those who may see his compassion as a weakness and use that against him.

When Danes return to Alfred’s lands they are in for a shock as the men of Wessex have been busy rebuilding and strengthening…not only on land but also the sea defences and I particularly loved the ship-based fighting scenes.

The Danes don’t really want to give up and as time goes on it’s clear Alfred needs to look closer to home for his enemies as betrayal seems to be a shadow that’s chasing him.. this Shadow comes out into the light towards the end of the book in some very hard hitting moments.. most certainly the wow factor chapter.

Alfred didn’t help himself though.. sometimes he made enemies without even meaning too but it’s the poison spoke from others that clearly seals the deal and sets the next instalment up to be the most exciting yet.

There’s also times where those who betrayed him need to be forgiven and brought back into the fold for the benefit of everyone and you can see how shrewd Alfred and his advisors would have need to be to manage this.

Development wise this plot had everything, we explore the connections Alfred has made, even down to the lowest man.. Alfred has earned their respect and he’s loyal to his men too, he hates to see them fall in battle but does everything within his power to see them safe and repaid in full for their support.

Alfred shines in this book in many ways, but none stand out more than his reforms, not only does he look to the security of the land but he looks at education too, so many dismiss the need but Alfred can see its importance to the future of his kingdom.

To say it’s a 5* read is an understatement so lets go ahead for a David’s Book Blurg first and say its a 5* PLUS read!..it just ticks so many boxes and is so beautifully executed.

The one only downside is only that I wish the publisher could offer hardbacks of the series.. if any series deserved to be in hardback its this one.

My thanks to the author for the ARC but readers of my blog will know the crack by now… the books been on pre-order and no free rides here 🙂

The book is out tomorrow so why not grab yourself a copy?

To find out more head to Goodreads or Amazon – Or get in touch with any good local bookstore 🙂

Their Castilian Orphan (The Castilian Saga Book 4) by Anna Belfrage

Today I’m reviewing Their Castilian Orphan (The Castilian Saga Book 4) by Anna Belfrage.

Here’s the blurb

It is 1294 and Eustace de Lamont is back in England after five years in exile. He will stop at nothing to ruin Robert FitzStephan and his wife, Noor d’Outremer.

Robert’s half brother, Eustace de Lamont, has not mellowed during his absence. He is more ruthless than ever, and this time he targets Robert’s and Noor’s foster son, Lionel.

Lionel is serving King Edward as a page when Eustace appears at court. Not only does Lionel become the horrified witness to Eustace’s violent streak, Eustace also starts voicing his suspicions about Lionel’s parentage. The truth about Lionel’s heritage is explosive—should King Edward find out, all would be lost for Robert and Noor.

In October of 1294, Wales rises in rebellion. Robert must leave his family unprotected to fight the Welsh rebels on the king’s behalf, comforted only by the fact that Eustace too is called to fight.

Except that Eustace has no intention of allowing his duty to his king—or a mere rebellion—come between him and his desire to destroy Robert FitzStephan . . .

Review

When I was offered the chance to read Their Castilian Orphan I thought I’d give it go.. I love the authors work so why not…but being book 4 in the series would I be missing anything? I’ve not read the rest of the series and jumping in this late always worries me…

I need not have worried though. Belfrage is one of those authors who really understands flow and detail which effortlessly allowed me to feel at home, rather than an imposter in the tale.

The first thing that really hit me was the raw emotion.. from the outset the tale is hard hitting.. Although I didn’t really know the characters yet I quickly started to warm to them and the events that took place.

I quickly learned about Lionel a foster child of Robert FitzStephan, a knight, and his wife, Noor d’Outremer. To many Lionel is simply and orphan.. but little do they know Lionel is actually an heir in his own right.. an heir of a former leader of the Welsh uprising.

I must admit I did get sidetracked here as I love a good uprising but the author keeps you focused well on the current events.

Lionel is now serving the King Edward and he’s earned some respect from the man.. he likes Lionel but with this favouritism comes the downsides..  not everyone looks at Lionel like the King does, some are quite jealous too.

Robert’s half-brother, Eustace is one who sets his sights on doing everything he can to bring his brother down..and one way he can do that is through Lionel.

When the worst happens and war looms tensions rise..and there’s a real chance friends could end up on opposite sides of the conflict.

There’s clearly friendships that have formed over the years and while I’m late to the party the emotion and pure connection is there..

So my go to for reviews is to talk about character development and for this one it’s even more important since I’ve come to the series late.. do I fell like I’ve missed anything?? Yeah…of course but the flow and development is so on-point if anything it just makes me want to read the rest of the books…I want to see the connections grow… did it diminish the tale… not one bit.. I quickly got to grips with the setting and the events. I guess just knowing the authors work I can tell just how good the rest of the series must be!

Now one topic if you read my reviews is my aversion to romance.. it’s not like I don’t want it in a book.. I just want the romance to flow natural, to understand the connections and emotion behind the romance. Being a fan of the author I already knew I was going to appreciate the romance when it was included and I couldn’t have be more correct. The emotion added with those scenes really helped me see how intertwined Robert and Noor are.. and their love for Lionel. Im a self confessed action fan… fight fight fight.. so It’s the level of thought in these sections that really adds the depth I need as a reader to enjoy it.

Oh, and for the fans of the actions like me there’s plenty to get to grips with but what Belfrage gets spot on is mirroring the fierceness of battle with the honest brutal emotions we go through in life..The same passion pours off the page during the battles as it does with the romantic scenes and it just gives it a wonderful balance.

Belfrage knows how to give you the perfectly rounded tale but it’s a roller-coaster with your emotions high from the first page to last.

5/5 Stars.

To find out more head to Goodreads or Amazon!

My thanks go to Anna Belfrage to allowing me an arc to aid my review. As a fan of the author I’ve also purchased a copy too!

BLOG TOUR – Excalibur by Peter Gibbons – (The Arthurian Chronicles Book 1)

Today we kick off the blog tour for Excalibur by Peter Gibbons!

Here’s the blurb

The sword has the power of Britain in its steel, men will follow and fight for whoever wields it…

Dark Age Britain. A legendary hero rises to unite a divided and threatened land…

A country left in ruins after the fall of the Roman Empire is plundered and broken. Saxon hordes have invaded and conquered the East coast of Britain in a blood-soaked Great War which tore the old kingdoms apart. From Bernicia to Kent, land and kingdoms are now under Saxon rule. But these new conquerors want more…

Britain’s remaining kingdoms are jaded by the constant threat of war, their Kings old, alliances fickle and frayed. It seems Britain must fall enslaved to the brutal and marauding conquerors from across the sea.

But no one counted on a new and fearsome warlord. A warrior granted power by the druid Merlin through the mighty sword Excalibur. A man with no Kingdom but a quest to unite the country and fight back against the baying Saxon warriors? He is known as the legendary Arthur.

The compelling, fast-paced start of a brand new series from bestselling writer Peter Gibbons. Perfect for the fans of Bernard Cornwall.

Praise for the series:

‘Epic, brutal action’ – Matthew Harffy

‘Bloody and brutal, Peter’s vivid writing really brings the story to life.’ – Donovan Cook

‘A superbly atmospheric tale of redemption that pitches the English against Viking raiders and resounds with the fierceness of battle-hardened warriors’ – MJ Porter

‘Thunderously atmospheric! Gibbons once again proves himself a master of Viking & Dark Age lore.’ – Gordon Doherty

‘Absolutely cracking. The best Viking saga I’ve read in years. A joy to pick up again.’ – Ross Greenwood

Review

To say Peter Gibbons has fast become a favourite of mine is an understatement. The author and publisher Boldwood, have been killing it in the historical fiction genre recently so when I learnt a new series was starting you can imagine the excitement I felt.

The Arthurian Chronicles tells us about one of the most fascinating characters in history in my opinion – Arthur. From a young age Arthur held a lot of interest to me.. mainly because no one could say one way or another if he existed but the whole idea of Arthur and the sword Excalibur excited me! for me it’s a risk going for Arthur as you need to get that excitement level right to match the myths, and the reader is going to have high expectations.

Did Gibbons deliver? Of course he did!! Gibbons knows his craft and most certainly knows his audience. We have what I’ve come to expect…the wonderful, dark and gruesome gore that any battle loving fan needs but the story is wonderfully weaved with fact and fiction.. I think that’s what makes Gibbon’s writing so exciting to read as his topics always allow some leeway for events to play out and you can really see the effort put into the tale to make the pieces come together.

The author isn’t afraid of detail either, setting the scene.. the ensemble cast too with many a familiar name, each play a part in the development and flow of the tale but in typical Gibbon’s style nothing Is forced in there, its done in what feels like such an effortless way, but I know must have took quite some time to write.

Book 1 is all about laying the foundations but that doesn’t mean you don’t have excitement and you can tell towards the end of the book that a battle is brewing.. but there’s still time for the author to keep the reader on their toes too leaving the reader fulfilled..but at the same time in silent shock.

I know I bang on about pace and flow.. probably way too much… but Peter Gibbon’s gets it.. the mix is so perfect it builds the excitement from the 1st page to last..

Don’t just take my word for any this either.. just look at the praise for the author.. Harffy, Cook, Porter and Doherty.. all household names in my book and certainly authors who are keeping my bookshelves full.

I did want to say there’s a downside but there isnt.. I’m always keen to crack on with the next book..luckily I won’t need to wait long with the next instalment already up for pre-order for release later in the year!

A very impressive read and after enjoying a lot of the authors books of late I feel like it’s also something new and fresh allowing Gibbon’s to further cement himself as one of the best authors out there!

A wonderous 5* read.

BLOG TOUR – Neptune’s Secret Code by Genna Rowbotham

Today is my turn on the blog tour for Neptune’s Secret Code by Genna Rowbotham.

Keep reading for a little giveaway too!!!

Here’s the blurb

★★ An Undersea Adventure filled with Magic, Friendship, and Bravery! ★★★

When Hannah is sucked into a vicious whirlpool in her effort to rescue kitten Leo,

she finds herself entering Neptune’s Undersea Kingdom where she

reawakens terrifying sea monsters from the depths of the sea.

The trouble is… Hannah is unable to return home until she’s overcome her

fear of the water, defeated the sea monsters, and solved the code that she

broke upon entering Neptune’s Kingdom.

With the help of her new friend, Marcie the Mermaid, will Hannah succeed?

Review

So me and my little one Georgia sat down to read this one together. Georgia loved the synopsis straightaway.

Hannah is travelling to stay with her auntie in Cornwall.. she’s not overly excited at first as she has a real fear of the sea but her auntie has a secret weapon to keep her happy…a lovely little kitten.. Leo.

Auntie Meg does everything she can to get Hannah to let go any enjoy herself but it’s little Leo that ultimately gets Hannah out of the house and reluctantly down by the sea..

Sucked into a whirlpool this sends Hannah on a magical journey and the only way to get home is to overcome her fears..

Georgia was taken in quite quickly by the story and the characters and loved the pictures too.

For me, I just loved the theme.. it’s got a the fantasy adventure edge that will appeal but I loved the idea of Hannah needing to face her fears.. it’s more depth to the tale than simply being a fun little adventure.

The author did a really great job of depicting a fascinating undersea world.. full a marvellous creatures and scary monsters.

The chapters are a decent length for a young reader, Georgia is 9 and reads well and you could see the flow was spot on, enticing her to read more.. it’s not always easy to keep a 9 year old focused but the author effortlessly kept her attention fully on the story.

Overall Neptune’s Secret Code is a vivid, perfectly paced fantasy perfectly aimed at younger readers and as a parent it felt great seeing Hannah battle those fears.. we all have fears we need to battle in life and it was nice to see the author tackle that in such a fun and exciting way.

Super 5*

Today is my turn on the blog tour for Rogue Hero by Rob Sinclair

Here’s the blurb

When a mystery bystander stops an assassination attempt on a prominent politician, it sparks a national search that captivates the nation…

Curtis Delaney watches the footage play out on the news, and immediately recognises the unidentified hero. He hasn’t seen his brother Finn in six years. He doesn’t know where he’s been in that time, or what he’s been doing. But there’s one thing he does know: Finn is no hero.

Curtis is determined to find his brother, but equally, Curtis is no detective. A husband and lawyer (and not the ‘good’ kind), with a mortgage and responsibilities, Curtis isn’t cut out for delving into whatever seedy business Finn has gotten involved with. But when armed men turn up on his doorstep, claiming to be FBI, he quickly realises he’s been left with no choice.

The hunt for the truth will take them from the Capitol building in Washington, to the sun-kissed beaches of Mexico, and the cold streets of London, uncovering secrets of fraud, blackmail and murder. Can the brothers reunite before the real hero is discovered by the wrong people?

Review

I’m a big fan of the authors work so was eager to get stuck into Rogue Hero.

The story starts of strong, setting the scene as a failed assassination attempt takes place.. but why did the hero run away? Who were they?

Curtis Delaney watches the footage as it hits the news and immediately knows who the hero is… it’s his brother Finn.

They might be brothers but it’s been 6 years since they last saw each other and they didn’t part on good terms.. but Curtis can’t help but want to help his brother out..

Here’s where things start to get juicy, the story switches focus between characters and we learn about Finn’s past.. it teases you in it’s build up.

We also see Curtis in the current day trying to balance his own work and life commitments with that of finding his brother.

What I really found interesting was the character development.. the focus shifts so neatly, the pace so good that you find it hard to really form the full picture of Curtis and Finn.. there’s so much going on.. its was a marvellously jam packed tale.. the brothers are more similar than you originally think.. both jealous and impetuous..its the perfect combo for a engrossing action thriller novel.

The devil is in the detail they say and Rob Sinclair knows how to write! When you are about 50% through.. while the waters are still unclear you start to see a shift..links.. but there’s more and more questions too.

It’s a complete mind f**k to pardon my language.. like its so unbelievably good but you just don’t see things coming.. like wow..there’s murder.. fraud.. blackmail.. but to what end? Oh Mr Sinclair.. you know how to hook me in don’t you ha ha.

I think the word to best highlight for this book is pace, in every aspect, the chapters flow well, not too long or short either.. each chapter designed just to give you enough to see the movement but not enough to give everything away too soon but at the same time nothing was drawn out or boring.. just a perfectly executed story that I reckon everyone will love!

This is by far the most engrossing tale from the author yet!

Easy 5*!

BLOG TOUR – Holliday by Matthew Di Paoli

Today is my turn on the blog tour for Holliday by Matthew Di Paoli

Here’s the blurb

Holliday follows the infamous 1880s gambler, dentist, and gunslinger, Doc Holliday. From the outset, Doc has been diagnosed with tuberculosis and is told to head to drier climates and imbibe to prolong his life. He has also heard of a spring located somewhere along the frontier that could cure him—what he believes to be the mythical Fountain of Youth.

The novel portrays Holliday as a rock star, a living legend, increasingly hounded by paparazzi, enamored by death, cards, booze, and women. Doc is a mixture of Clint Eastwood and Jim Morrison, and though he is able to help his friend, Wyatt Earp, exact revenge, his condition worsens, traveling from Arizona to Denver, and finally dying in a sanatorium in Colorado with his boots off. A slow and unfitting end for such a bombastic outlaw.

Review

First off it’s confession time.. I’ve always had a soft spot for Doc Holliday. Ever since I was about 8 or 9 years old and caught the movie Tombstone..he’s such an amazing character but often overshadowed.

What I immediately liked about the book is it humanized Doc early on.. you learn about the consumption that ails him.. how he lost his mother to the very thing that is trying to take his life now..

We also get introduced to Doc’s vices too.. and it really brings life to the man and while yes he’s not a saint you can’t help but like him.

Holliday is on a mission.. he wants to enjoy the finer things in life but at the same time is searching for a cure… you can tell he’s torn.. I don’t think he ever really thought it existed but at the same time he keeps going.. keeps looking for hope.

I guess what I really wanted from this book was to know Doc’s story… there’s plenty of tales regarding his time with Wyatt Earp but he’s never the main focus and that always baffled me… he was always the most interesting one of the group.

Doc’s tale is pure raw energy and emotion.. everything is felt in the moment and the author does a wonderful job at making the scenes jump out of the page.. your not just reading a story…you really feel the guttural sense of urgency.. but at the same time see Doc’s clear talent at not letting his emotions show.

I wouldn’t say the book is for the faint hearted.. there’s real emotion and while Holliday is the main character it’s the supporting characters, his links to them and how they interact that really make things become real. Doc doesn’t let people get close to him often but you can see why certain people make it through his shield.

Overall this was a cracking , engaging and thought-provoking read.. it offered me so much more than I could have ever expected and it’s a beautifully woven, harrowing tale of such a fascinating man.

I have to give the book a 5* rating but that truthy doesn’t do the tale or the authors writing style justice.. the book just effortlessly flows and is beautiful in its sorrow.

This is the kind of book I like to see!!

My thanks go to the author and Melissa at Author Marketing Experts for the opportunity to be on the tour. This is one of those books I’ll be getting a physical copy of shortly too.. It deserves to be read more than once by everyone!

BLOG TOUR – SIN:THETICA by Keith Anthony Baird

Today is my stop on the blog tour for SIN:THETICA by Keith Anthony Baird

As a fellow Baird (no relation to my knowledge ha) it felt right to jump on board with this tour and I can tell you now I’m so glad I did!

Here’s the blurb

The Sino-Nippon war is over.

It is 2113 and Japan is crushed under the might of Chinese-Allied Forces.

A former Coalition Corps soldier, US Marine Balaam Hendrix is now a feared bounty hunter known as ‘The Reverend’.

In the sprawl of NeuTokyo, on this lawless frontier, he must track down the rogue employee of a notorious crime lord.

But, there’s a twist.

His target has found protection inside a virtual reality construct and Hendrix must go cyber-side to corner his quarry. The glowing neon signs for SIN:THETICA are everywhere, and promise escape from a dystopian reality.

But will it prove the means by which this hunter snares his prey, or will it be the trap he simply can’t survive?

Review

Set in the future we meet Balaam Hendrix, a former Marine who’s done his time and has the scars to show for it.

Hendrix is a now feared bounty hunter…no one can escape his justice once he’s got them in his sight..

An interesting offer comes knocking on his door.. and although it screams “danger”  Hendrix can’t turn down the money..and he’s smart too.. it might be more of an issue for him if he ignores the offer so he might as well make some money out of the situation.

What’s the job you might ask.. well he’s got to track someone down…and keep them alive long enough for his employer to mete out justice..  not his typical job.. he’s usually a shoot first kind of guy but Hendrix can manage it.

Then the twist hits.. the mark is protected.. protected by virtual reality.. if he’s brought out too soon he would die and that wouldn’t please his employer so Hendrix heads into the cyber world to track the man down.

Now this is where the twists really come.. there’s lots of action showing the skill Hendrix has but at the same time the cogs are turning and Hendrix knows things aren’t adding up.. but why?  What’s the end game here… it just doesn’t make sense.

The ending left me shocked but quite in awe too.. it was a real curveball and a damn good one too.

I know I bang on about pace and flow but damn.. SIN:THETICA nails it! There’s never time to get bored or tired.. it’s exciting and engaging and the story flows naturally.

And do you want to know the craziest thing? You get all of that for less than £1 on kindle!! Like how can you say no to that??

Super 5* read!

My thanks go to Keith, Brigids Gate Press and Zoé at Zooloo’s Book Tours for allowing me to take part in the tour today! It was a delight to be part of it, a joy to read the book and my absolute pleasure to purchase a copy of the book, it’s a steal at that price!
