Review

Princess No Knots is a lovely little book about a Princess who absolutely hates to have her hair brushed.

She must quickly learn how to deal with her emotions to make sure she doesn’t loose her crown.. a Princess must look the part after all.

I read this with my two little girls and they loved it, they were engaged from first page to last.

The story itself is easy to follow and is paced nicely to enable younger children to read this themselves.

I enjoyed the message of the book and it helped me start a talk with my kids on how sometimes you have to do things you may not like but it gets it on the right level so they can fully understand why.

When asked the girls really wanted to tell everyone how lovely the illustrations are, although Georgia fully believes they aren’t anywhere near as good as her drawings ha. I apologise to the wonderful illustrator Matt Richards for that comment! ha

Georgia loved the book so much she has read it by herself a few more times independently which was lovely to see.

Overall Princess No Knots is a colourful and engaging read to support younger children as they learn in life.

Author Bio –

Deborah Dillon’s love of books, poems and story telling stems from her Granddad Jim who always used to make up stories at bedtime when she was young. Every story would take her to crazy worlds of adventure and friendship, each story sprinkled with a tiny bit of determination.

Since having children of her own Deborah has continued this family tradition but rather than keeping all the stories in her head, she decided to write them down. As her children were growing up she was inspired to write about whatever obstacles or challenges they, or their friends, faced then overcame.

Deborah is a firm believer that something magical happens when you read a book together.

BLOG TOUR- A Night of Flames by Matthew Harffy! HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY!!!

Today is my turn on the blog tour for A Night of Flames by Matthew Harffy! It also happens to be the official publication day too!!!

If you follow my blog you’ll know Harffy is a firm favourite so to say I was eager to get to grips with this one was an understatement!

Review

Firstly I have to commended the author on creating a new series set away from his Serpent Sword series but at the same time offering subtle nods to his previous work. These litter eastereggs are there to find and really did put a smile on my face. I know the characters aren’t real but at the same time the investment you put into a story as the reader makes them real, so adding in these little extras triggers the memories and it’s great to see those adventures are still locked in my head 😊.

So we are back with Hunlaf, he’s firmly shed his monk robes for the touch of cold hard steel but that doesn’t mean he’s still not conflicted at times. Mainly because the warrior life has come easy to him and sometimes that doesn’t sit well with his soul. He’s about to be tested like never before.

Runolf wants to start building his boat to cross the sea to find out what has become of his family. Hunlaf has a desire more then most to join him after his kin was take in a previous Viking raid. Neither know how their loved ones fair so as you can imagine.. there’s a lot of nervous energy going around with them both eager to set sail.

After receiving the blessing of the King to build the boat and with orders to gain a truce with the Norse we see a few new faces join our band of heroes and at times tensions can run high but the call of the sea and the torment it can cause soon allows bonds to grow.. which will make future events even harder to swallow. The journey across the sea will be completed but comes at a price.

When eventually they arrive on Norse lands all is not well. A slave has revolted and is causing havoc. If Runolf and Hunlaf ever want to see peace and their kin again they must fight a new threat.. and this threat is a little bit crazy to say the least.

We learn early on that death will show it’s face so while I was kind of prepared it really didn’t help lessen the shock when events unfolded.

What happens next is beyond belief and is the best 10 – 15 chapters I’ve ever read in my life…the grizzly horror.. the bloodshed.. the pain.. it’s beautiful in it’s madness as Hunlaf tries to make it out of this one alive.. but nothing is certain, but.. Anything is possible.

If it’s even possible I think Harffy gets better and better which each offering and as this is still a relatively new series for the author it’s given him the ability to explore things a little more than with his established characters I feel.. he really let his creative juices flow on this one.

I always like to comment on writing style, chapter length etc but on this one I simple can’t.. I was so engrossed I just didn’t take that in.. I just ploughed through this one with a desire to learn the outcome.. We know Hunlaf makes it through this adventure as he’s the one recounting the tale to us but the rest is not known and there’s so much at stake… I really didn’t want to see loose anyone but it wouldn’t be a Harffy book without a few tears.

It’s a 5* from me without a shadow of a doubt.

It’s unreal how haunting amazing this book is.. how is it even possible to write something so disturbingly beautiful! There’s so many emotions that pass through you as you read this one and it’s something that will really stay with you.

Review

I’m a fan of MJ Porter but being prolific with the releases I find it hard to keep up ha! I jumped at the chance to get onboard with this new series early!

The story follows young Icel whose past is shadowed in mystery.. his mother unfortunately died and he’s never known who his farther is so he’s been raised by his uncle Cenfrith. Icel has trained in the arts of healing but there’s something in him just waiting to come out.

King Ecgberht is looking to expand his reach and senses weakness in Mercia. He’s right I guess as King Wiglaf seems to disappear but why? And have we been given the full story?

When King Ecgberht descends Icel is forced to flee to safety with his uncle and his friend Edwin. Along the way Icel learns a little of past events but only what his uncle allows. Will he ever learn the full truth?

What happens next was the most amazing few chapters I’ve ever read! I can’t spoil it but Cenfrith is an amazing character who supports Icel and keeps him safe. When the opportunity comes for Icel to save Mercia he sets out to find King Wiglaf.

The tension mounts and battle commences.. it’s time for Icel to learn more about himself than he ever thought possible.

Son of Mercia is a real coming of age tale for Icel as he learns what kind of man he’s destined to be… although there’s certainly more to come.

I can’t give this anything less than 5*. The plot was astonishingly gripping. I’ve struggled the past few months to devote time to reading but I was hooked as soon as I picked this one up and it’s helped me fall back in love with books again.

What a cracking read! I look forward to more!

Today is my turn on the blog tour for The Dummy Pass by Patrick Smith.

Review

The Dummy Pass follows young William as he struggles to find his way in life, there’s family issues but also bullying to contend with.

These kind of events happen to many children and the bullying aspect really hits home. Some may not think what the other children do is really bullying but where do we draw the line? it has a real effect on William, and we ultimately see him encouraged to join the rugby team.

William soon notices a change in himself, true friendship and love from his family has help build his confidence.

The Dummy Pass is the perfect read for any young child going through the ups and downs of life, it helps to remind you that things will be ok.

A particularly liked that they have chosen to tell this tale from a boys perspective. Even growing up 20 year ago, boys didn’t cry or get upset, if you did that just made things worse, I think it’s good to show anyone can feel down, alone, forgotten and the feelings we have are natural.

My children are 7 and they really understood some of Williams feelings and helped them open up about things that maybe they haven’t liked in life and that its ok to not to be ok with something.

It’s a lovely read with an even better message. 5/5 Stars

As well as being an author, Patrick is a marketing consultant, charity director and open water swimmer. He is also a divorced father.

Review

Monster Max and the Marmalade Ghost is a fun little tale which my two 7 year olds really enjoyed reading. Max has a very cool secret.. he can turn into Monster Max and use the powers gained to do good assisted by his faithful friend Peregrine! Which is exactly what they set out to do when it appears the marmalade in the old people’s home seems to be haunted!

The style of writing is easy to read with kids and the illustrations break up the tale nicely to allow the kids time to absorb the story without overloading them. The page count too helps, it’s a god length being over 100 pages but I broke it down and read the story over 3 nights, each nights the girls eager to see what would happen next.

There’s lots of humour added to give the kids a little laugh too, burps a plenty 😊

When asked what the girls enjoyed it was a resounding success for Max’s monster transformation! And they loved the illustrations.

It’s a fun little kids mystery adventure and my two loved following Max’s journey!

It’s 5/5 Stars from my two!!

Today on David’s Book Blurg I’m taking part in the blog tour for The Boy Who Breathed Underwater written by Izzy Rees and illustrated by Sarah-Leigh Willis!

Review

The Boy Who Breathed Underwater is a fun little rhyming book following a little boy who is offered the chance to have a super power for the rest of his life.

As the boy trys out different powers before making is ultimate choice he sees the downside some of these powers may have and ultimately learns he’s perfect just the way he is.

I read this with my two girls and they loved it, they loved the idea of super powers but agreed they don’t need them… Georgia for example says she has cheetah speed anyway ha.

As the parent I found the book fun and fast with a positive message, it allowed me the time to tell the girls just how brilliant they are, being twins they can be compared a lot which can mean sometime they don’t feel so “super” and this little tale helped a little for them understand it’s perfect just to be yourself.

When asked what superpowers the girls would have Georgia of course referred back to her cheetah speed while Abigail decided she would like to have power of the mind, to move stuff, to help clean her room.. not bad ha.

When asked if they enjoyed the illustrations it was a resounding yes! although Abi did say she thinks she could do better ha! She loves to draw bless her!

The girls gave this a 5* rating and would love to recommend it to their friends. When I pointed out this is only one of the books in this series their ears picked up! Guess I know what I need to buy them next ha ha.

Izzy Rees was born in West London, but has spent the last thirty years living in Derby. Ten years ago, when her three girls were young, she began work on a series of rhyming picture books, created in snatched moments, and initially written on small scraps of paper or whatever was available. David’s Book Blurg has been a bit quiet over the last few weeks while I enjoyed some much needed down time with the family… that being said I’ve got a bumper load of reviews to get through for you lucky people to read 😊.

Review

Kerry Kaya previously offered up the awesome novel The Price which followed the life of Fletch and his brother Spencer. After some grisly events Fletch has been in prison for 22 years but is now back out as a free man.

Firstly, do you need to have read The Price to fully enjoy The Score you might ask? Not at all. The author has written the tale so well, with the little details, meaning you could pick this up and read as a standalone no problem.

Truthfully though I’m glad I had read the previous book as the author builds on the character development of Fletch and having that prior background just elevated the development and helped me understand Fletch’s motivations better.

After 22 years behind bars Fletch wants nothing more than to keep his nose clean but history has a way of repeating itself.. His children, having grown up without his influence Kit and Austin have found themselves drawn into the gangster life themselves.. and it’s not been an easy ride thanks to the despicable Rosco Taylor.

We learn more about Kit and Austin’s upbringing.. the downfall of their mother and the things they did to survive and within this the author manged to throw in some very good twists.. you know something is coming but the efforts some men will go to in the name of vengeance is unreal.

Fletch is thrown into the deep end to save his kids. With the help of old friends Fletch battles his past and does whatever he can to keep his family safe and make amends for past deeds… but can he fix things without getting blood on his hands?

What I really enjoyed about this offering was the character development. I didn’t always like Fletch in the previous tale.. his emotions didn’t scream gritty gangster to me.. but added to this offering I understand him so much better now, it’s family.. you’ll do anything for those you love.

The Score is a family orientated gangland tale that packs a punch. What gives it the 5 star is simply the character development which couldn’t have been more perfect.

Today is my turn on the blog tour for The Accused, book 4 in the PI Charlie Cameron series by Owen Mullen.

Review

We are back with our favourite flawed PI Charlie Cameron. He’s a magnet for trouble and he just can’t seem to say no.. even when he does say no to a case trouble still finds it’s way to his door!

First through the door is Kim Rafferty..things with her gangster husband Sean are unravelling fast and she wants Charlie’s help. Sean is well known to Charlie.. worse still Charlie is well known to Sean.. it’s best if he stays clear of this one.. but can he?.. and if he doesn’t help what will happen. To Kim?

Sean has more troubles than just his wife to be concerned about, his benefactor is visiting. The visit needs to go well.. Sean has a temper and won’t take anything less than perfect on this one. Things never go to plan do they though?

The other potential case is around Dennis Boyd who has served 15 years for a crime he claims not to have committed. He wants to find out who set him up. The case is made more complicated when another body hits the ground related to the original case. This is a tough one to handle as Charlie can’t seek assistance for his long time friend DS Andrew Geddes without blurring the lines of work and friendship.

As always Charlie can rely on his other source of information Patrick Logue, his humour always has me smiling… he’s a loveable rogue and really adds to the story. Charlie would be lost without him.

I’ve come to expect high quality from Owen Mullen, action packed, gritty and full of twists and turns to keep you guessing what will happen next and boy does this one tick all the boxes! The series just keeps getting better and better! How is that even possible? How do you build on perfection?

The storylines are hard hitting and convincing mixed with some wonderful dark humour that just makes this an outstanding 5*

Many thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources for having me on the tour… the beauty in this one is I already had the book downloads as I’ve been a follower of Colin’s for some time.. although I’ve only read 1 or 2 of his books so far… to my shame :(. I was eager to rectify this 🙂

Review

As the story starts the scene is set… a witch is about to be hanged.. but was she a witch? or is this a case of lies or hysteria? In the 17th century belief in witchcraft was common place, and a simple loathing of an individual or misunderstanding could see someone hanged!

After the witch has been hanged the people go back to their lives like nothing has changed.. but for some it has. Robert Winter feels guilty.. and the witch is soon to visit to show him the error of his way… but how? she’s dead… and if she’s really a witch why haunt him?

Answers come thick and fast.. he’s not the only one to have seen the witch.. and she’s after justice… the Doctor’s course is set… it’s his duty now to see that confessions are gained from the accusers.

Black Witch Moon is a nice little novella, fast following and packed with plot. The writing style suits the period its set in and the language used made the story feel more real.

In less than 100 pages Colin Garrow manages to transport us to another time.. makes us feel the hysteria of witchcraft.. you get carried away yourself finding is hard to distinguish reality.

A very enjoyable and fresh read

Author Bio –

Colin Garrow grew up in a former mining town in Northumberland. He has worked in a plethora of professions including: taxi driver, antiques dealer, drama facilitator, theatre director and fish processor, and has occasionally masqueraded as a pirate. All Colin’s books are available as eBooks and most are also out in paperback, too. Today is my turn on the blog tour for The Wolf Mile (The Pantheon Series Book 1) by C F Barrington.

So I’d noticed people talking about this book on twitter and the cover totally grabbed me, when offered the chance to be part of the blog tour to celebrate the paperback release I jumped at the chance and bought a copy 😊

From the start it was very clear this book is unlikely anything I’ve read before.. and it’s just what I needed. History clashes with modern day in the Pantheon Games and blood will coat the streets of Edinburgh!

As the books starts we follow the lives of the new recruits, each have their own reason for being there..but do they have what it takes to stay and survive the games?

We also explore the history behind the games and the idea that the reason the law turn a blind eye to the bloodshed is that money talks and the super wealthy have lined some very important pockets to ensure the games continue.. but it’s not a game for everyone..it’s life or death.

There’s certainly a lot of build-up and we get to see the recruits put through their paces, they are called thralls at this stage, they have no name, so learning more about them, their skills, shape, size and the like helped me build a picture of each of them.

I enjoyed the character development and the fact we are teased with little bits of info.. Tyler’s family for example..I’m sure there’s more to come.

The concept was fresh and exciting, the story flowed and developed well, it certainly sets the stage well for future instalments… There’s blood, mystery, secrecy, deceit and corruption… what’s not to like?

Well worth the read and I’d certainly like to see where this goes. The Wolf Mile is a eal tease of a book… I want to know more.
