BLOG TOUR – The App by Stuart James

Today is my turn on the blog tour for The App by Stuart James!

Here’s the blurb.

The App…

Once you’re in, they’ll never let you leave.

Whatever happens, don’t download The App.

It will come in the form of a link. Maybe in your DM’s on a social media account, the junk folder of your emails or a WhatsApp message from a friend.

* You’ll be enticed by the chance of winning one hundred thousand pounds on offer every Friday, wired straight into the winner’s bank account.

* It’s not a joke.

* This part is genuine.

* Someone can and will win the money.

* But at what cost?

Marty Benson gets the link sent to him by a friend. So what is the harm in looking?
He clicks it, downloads the app and enters a few basic details.
A message prompts him to wait while he’s loaded onto the system.
An hour later, another message.

• Do not delete the app.

• Do not tell anyone outside of your family about the app.

• Send the link to one person who is close to you.

* Do not throw your phone away.

* Always narrate while streaming.

• If you break any of the rules, we’ll kill a member of your family. Then we’ll kill you.

Marty is sent a picture of his wife, who is shopping with her mother in Oxford Street.

As Marty struggles to breathe, he clicks the links and watches the most recent streams, realising what happens within the
app.

Every Friday morning, a person is randomly picked from social media.

They now have a bounty on their head—a death warrant. But they don’t know it.

Their profile appears on the app’s main page; all their details are displayed.

Every app member must play the game at least once a month or face the consequences.

Kill the person randomly selected from social media.

Win one hundred thousand pounds.

As Marty watches the terror unfold and everyone streaming the hunt within the app, he realises he has to do something.

But how do you stop a murder, when everyone could be the killer?

Review

The vast majority of us will own a phone, a vast majority of us would happily download an app based on a friends recommendation.. but what if that link they have sent is dangerous? Many of us will have downloaded a virus at some point but in comparison.. This App… it’s life or death!

Marty downloads the app, it’s been sent to him by his best friend Davey..but the sinister side of the app shows quickly when a picture of his family is sent to his phone with list of instructions. He can’t delete the app.. they will know.. he can’t ignore the app either as he soon learns what happens to those who don’t play by the rules.

While Marty tries to get to grips with the situation he’s faced with we learn of the learn of the app creator and his own twisted mind.

We also get to know what it feels like to be one of the hunted!

I loved how the author switched perspectives, you see things through the eyes of the creator, the hunter and the hunted! This led to an easy flowing and exciting tale that grips you..it’s like the author keeps teasing you.. you have to know what happens next.. like the app.. you can’t ignore it..can’t look away..

The App is all about the tension..the creepiness of those involved with the app so the characters themselves while good were not my main focus.. It was all about the app and the creator’s lust for torment and death that had me hooked, the character has more depth than the others and I would have loved more time to see him develop further as he’s just so wonderfully twisted. Even though you should despise him.. there’s something that draws you to him and his life is what really makes the book pop!

Overall a fun read that explores how technology can be misused and the depths some people will go to survive… as well as the depths some will sink to in order to fulfil their perverted desires!

A 4* easily from me,

Author Bio

I have always loved scary stories, especially ones that shocked me, left me terrified, looking under my bed or in the wardrobe before going to sleep.

There was just a fantastic buzz whenever I watched or read something that took my breathe away.

I remember going to my nan’s house in Ireland as a youngster with my mother and sister, on the West Coast, staying in a cottage, surrounded by miles of fields and my family sitting around the table in the kitchen at night telling ghost stories. Going out and exploring derelict farmhouses in the middle of nowhere. I remember clearly the field at the end of the road was supposed to be haunted by headless nuns. My cousins often remind me of the great times we had, frightening each other and running for our lives whenever we’d see something that didn’t look right.

This is why I love nothing more than to tell a story.

I’m so grateful when people not only read my thrillers but also take the time to get in touch and leave a review. To me, that is the greatest feeling, hearing from people that have enjoyed my work. I know then that I’m doing something right.

I’m 49, married and have two beautiful children. Currently, I’m a full-time plumber but would love nothing more than to make a living from my writing. I hope I write stories and people continue to enjoy them for years to come. That would be completely amazing and a dream come true.

BLOG TOUR – Warrior and Protector by Peter Gibbons

Today we kick off the blog tour for the wonderful Warrior and Protector by Peter Gibbons.

Here’s the blurb.

The start of a brand NEW series – an unputdownable fast paced adventure, filled with unforgettable characters.

989 AD.

Alfred the Great’s dream of a united England has been forged by his daughter Aethelfaed and grandson, King Aethelstan.

The Vikings have been expelled from York following the death of Erik Bloodaxe, and for two generations there has been peace between Saxon and Dane.

A new Viking warlord Olaf Tryggvason seeks revenge for Bloodaxe’s death and the slaughter that followed, and has set his sights on a fresh assault on England’s shores. With Skarde Wartooth they set sail for Saxon lands, hungry for glory, conquest and vengeance.

Beornoth, a brutal and battle-hardened Saxon Thegn, is called to arms to fight and protect the Saxon people from the savage Norse invaders. On a personal crusade, he joins the army of Byrthnoth, Lord of the east Saxons in a desperate fight against the bloodthirsty Vikings.

Beornoth must lay his own demons to bed, survive vicious attacks and find redemption for his tragic past.

Review

The Vikings.. previously defeated.. fled home.. but many years have gone by and time does not heal, some still hold a grudge and it’s time to return.. time for vengeance!

These Vikings are true blood.. not the settled kind who embraced the shores of England.. the brutal murderous kind ready to spill blood.

The King needs warriors to stop this Viking force from shedding more blood, the scars from the last time at sill raw. Real warriors are needed, ones who know how to stand up to these Vikings.

This is when we meet Beornoth, he’s a man of pure strength but he’s broken. The loss of his family to Viking’s sent him spiralling into the drink.. he tumbled so far down he even lost the title Thegn and everything that comes with it!

There’s a chance to reclaim the title.. reclaim the honour associated but Beornoth is bitter and rightly so.. but a chance encounter..and a stupid amount of ale help set Beornoth on his journey of redemption… he’s pretty much left with no choice!

Along the way he faces internal battles as well as the physical ones.. can he stop the drink long enough to become the man he once was? Can he face his demons.. Will fighting the Vikings ease his suffering?

Beornoth struggles playing second fiddle a little, he’s not in command and has also been tasked to look after a boy, the son of Ealdorman Aethelhelm! He’s to train him in battle..yeh this isn’t going to be easy.

The best character for me was Wulfhere, another fallen warrior who swears his sword to Beornoth and the first 5 or 6 chapters really do hook you in and set the scene and cast and give so much development before you really even get stuck into the blood and guts of the tale. To have characters stick in your mind in so few pages is awesome and a credit to the author.

I’ve heard many a good thing about the author but this is my first foray into his world and imagination, and I’m so glad a jumped on this one and feel rather disappointed in myself that it’s taken me this long to pick up one of his books…I’ll learn from this error! Ha.

Set in 10th century England you know the book is going to be filled of blood and guts but that’s only part of it, Gibbons manages to add a wealth of depth and feeling and sets the scene so well, it’s a fiercely powerful tale of redemption.. One I’m fully committed to now!

Warrior and Protector is not your typical warrior tale of battle, it has that but it has the character depth needed to make a series succeed and I’m excited for more!

I really wish I could put some spoilers in to really give you an idea of Beornoth’s journey, there’s soo much history and meaning and this leads to some quite intense and emotional scenes that really hit you.

I don’t like to compare but I always see people do this so here we go.. you’ll love this if you enjoy authors such as Gordon Doherty, Matthew Harffy and C. R. May, each of these 4 have their own style but what they really have in common is depth. A warriors tale, a journey, with pure raw emotion flowing.

Warrior and Protector – A skull cracking 5 star!

BLOG TOUR – Lilac Skies by Shivani Bansal

Today is my turn on the blog tour for Lilac Skies by Shivani Bansal

Here’s the blurb.

Punjab, India. It’s 1942 and Meena is still a girl when her parents tell her she is to be married, in five days, to a total stranger. What’s more, he lives in Kenya. A different country, a different continent, thousands of miles away from everything she knows. She doesn’t want to marry, but with four brothers and sisters, Meena knows she will be a burden to her parents if she stays. And it isn’t her decision to make.

Nairobi, Kenya. Meena’s new home is beyond anything she could have imagined. Nairobi is beautiful, but tensions under the colonial British rule run high. She is told she is lucky because her husband Amar is young and handsome, but all is not as it seems within her marriage… Tucked away from the outside world, Meena spends her time by the mango tree dreaming of going home… until she realises the friendships that she forges here are all she can hold onto.

Going from girl to woman in a strange land, can Meena find a way to finally make her life her own?

Review

Not the typical book I’d pick up but something about the blurb just sucked me in.

Meena is a happy young woman living in India with her family, unfortunately times are tough and with many mouths to feed her parents make the decision for her, that she should marry.

Amar shows interest in the marriage and dowry agreed so in 5 days they will be man and wife. This is real emotional struggle for Meena as not only does she not know the man but he’s also from Kenya so this marriage will mean moving to another country.

At first things look ok, maybe just a little shaky as Meena is very home sick. This is made so much worse as Amar’s mother lives with them and treats her son like butter wouldn’t melt, he’s the golden boy. This means no one would be good enough for her boy and she constantly undermines Meena. It doesn’t help that Meena hasn’t learnt the skills to cook. She’s essentially a slave.

There’s a ray of hope for Meena when Amar’s sister arrives and they soon form a friendship but nothing can save her from Amar’s darkside which ultimately leads to some very tragic events.

The story moves at a decent pace and Meena ends up in the UK but it’s not going to be the dream life, and the events that happen ensure Amar’s darkside comes out time and time again.. he promises to change.. but they always say that..

Meena’s only happy times is with her children or the friend she makes, Kanika. Kanika understands Meena’s pain more than most and ultimately is the one who keeps Meena going, they support each other.

Lilac Skies is a beautiful but harrowing disturbing tale that touches on many difficult subjects, arranged marriages, miscarriage, domestic abuse… you’d think with such subjects the book would be a difficult read but I found it the opposite, it was so beautifully written it flowed and you just got invested, knowing Meena would find the strength to keep going.

While reading I can honestly admit the story flowed so well I described it as poetry so it was wonderful to read towards the end of the tale that Meena takes up poetry.. it just felt like the character really did write her own story.

Hauntingly beautiful, beautifully written, a story that will really stay with you.

BLOG TOUR – Thief by Owen Mullen – REVIEW

Today is my turn on the blog tour for Thief by Owen Mullen!

Here’s the blurb.

It takes a thief to catch a thief…

Charley Glass arrived in her family’s lives like the hurricane she’d escaped. But she hadn’t run far enough: the ruthless Giordano family are on her tail and want two things – her life, and the return of the property she stole from them. No matter how many bodies stack up.

After years of longing, Charley finally has the family she’s always wanted, but now she’s going to have to tell them the real reason she came looking them. There is only one way she’s going to stay alive, and that is to employ the muscle of the notorious Glass Family.

The head of the family, Luke, has become embroiled in a dangerous political plot and isn’t sure they’re strong enough to take on one of New Orleans’ biggest crime gangs. But he’d put his life on the line to protect the empire they’ve built – even if they’ll have to take on an enemy hurting enough to cross an ocean for revenge.

Page-turning, gritty, and utterly compelling, Thief is Owen Mullen’s best book yet. Perfect for fans of Martina Cole, Kimberley Chambers and Mandasue Heller.

Review.

I’m so glad to be back with the Glass family! I’m invested in them now so was eager to find out what could happen this time!

The glass family is made up of Luke, Nina and Charley. Luke is the head of the family, but Nina and Charley are the ones who keep the money coming into the bank.

Thief is a masterpiece in storytelling and any aspiring writer should look at how effortlessly Owen Mullen weaves a tale, there’s multiple things events.. numerous characters but it’s balanced perfectly and flows so easily.

Nina, oh Nina. She’s had it tough, and she’s not fully recovered either. She’s dealing with her demons but at what cost?

Charley, oh Charley…Now the backstory comes out. Charley is the newest member of the family who showed up one day, proved her worth and has never looked back… but what’s she’s been running from is about to catch up with her.

Luke, ah Luke. I can’t not love the guy. Family is all that matters but he doesn’t know everything..there’s some secrets.. and nothing is certain in life.. can he keep the family safe and find away to help both Charley and Nina?

What I really love about Owen’s writing is it’s prefect.. utterly engrossing, dark and gritty. It’s the tone..I don’t know how he does it but the style of writing is exactly what I want to see.. it’s the grittiness.. the realness.. the depth to the characters.. utter WOW!

This is the best instalment yet for plot and character development. Don’t get me wrong, every book in the series is great but this one is a cut above.. the depth and time given to each character’s story arc is amazing. I really didn’t think it would be easy to develop the existing characters while introducing new ones so perfectly!

For me George Ritchie steals the show, he’s the backbone behind the Glass family.. he’s such a pleasure to go on a journey with.. I don’t think will ever truly know George.. he keeps a lot to himself but it’s more what he doesn’t say that develops him…a man of few words but when he talks.. you listen!

Plot wise there’s multiple angles to this tale with some cracking twists along the way, it’s unbelievable how much is packed in but expertly driven along by the author at a steady pace. What I loved the most was the backstory, it helped me understand motivations for sure… but more than anything it was just so damn exciting!

Once you get stuck into this one you won’t be able to put it down!

To find our more head to Goodreads or Amazon!

My thanks go to the author, the publisher, NetGalley, and Rachel’s Random Resources for having me on the blog tour! I received an ARC of the book as part of the tour, but this was always going to be on my bought list! I never miss a book of Owen’s and would happily pay anything he asked! I’m just greedy and like to get a book quick and support the author with my reviews as soon as I can 😊

An ideal book making bedtime fun, relaxing and a thoroughly positive experience

Review

I’m going to start off being perfectly honest with you. I was a little sceptical as to how a book could help with the issues I’ve faced with my children and bedtime. Georgia, bless her is a very anxious child and we’ve been working hard with her, talking to her on her level, trying different bits to help her through what I hope is a phase that she will overcome or learn to cope with. Bedtime has not been the easiest some nights, sometimes she’s fine, other nights it’s horrible and she just needs you constantly near her to feel safe and happy.

When this book popped up I honestly thought, why not?. It couldn’t hurt to give it a try. So I sat down the 1st night with both children and read the first story to them. Both loved the idea of listening to the story, then drawing what they had seen in their mind afterwards, so after night 1 I was felling quite happy.

Then night 2 came… I read to Georgia first and within 5 minutes she was fast asleep! I then read to Abi and again, within 5 minutes fast asleep! I’m still not sure how that happened ha ha.

Was this a one off you might ask? Nope, My wife has also got onboard and read with the girls and again both of them were flat out!

I sat with the girls and asked them to tell me what they thought of the book and it was a resounding “AWESOME” from them with big smiles on their faces! Georgia especially liked it and she said it really did help her sleep and she wants to continue with the stories. She seemed more happy that she felt understood a little better, sometimes is hard to deal with kids and anxiety, to get the conversation on the right level so I really feel this booked helped us all.

What I loved about the book myself was not only that it engages the child but also it helps set the mood, the adult’s tone, the fact the kids have their eyes closed, relaxed. Everything is just nicely designed to help forget about the stress of the day and just enjoy being with the girls and for me it was nice to just sit with them and not simply be focused on finishing a story so I could do something else, I was there.. part of it, life can be busy, this helped me realise sometimes I just need to take a step back too.

I do hope others find this book useful, I know I did. I’ll certainly be carrying on with this one.

I’m amazed how just reading calmly and engaging with Georgia in a different way made an instant impact on her anxiety levels.

5/5 stars! EASY!

Review

I’m a dad of two 8 year olds.. and these two are growing fast, growing into their own styles while learning about the world we live in.

One of the things I love to do with my girls is get our craft skills going… the other thing I love is bargain hunting in the charity shops.. (Okay mainly for books ha ha). My girls love the charity shops, finding a bargain and knowing you are helping charity at the same time, they also love to give to the charity shops as they are blessed enough to have more toys/clothes/games than any one really needs. Mix these two loves together and add in a bit of knowledge and we are on to a winner… That’s where The Fashion Fix comes in.

The book offers up some ideas on how you can refresh your wardrobe rather than buying new, to create something this is unique and just for you while at the same time learning about the industry and why we need to do more.

Going through the ideas the girls really loved the idea of making their own charm bracelets, it’s something they are keen on anyway but we never thought of seeing what bits and pieces we could pick up from the charity shop to use to help make a special bracelet, always opting for the little kids kits..well no more… we’ve already got a shopping spree planned to find some bits to make their new bracelets 😊

After just having their ears pierced recently too the girls loved the idea of making pom-pom earrings, and even more so making pom-poms themselves ha ha

The girls are also looking forward to making their own keychains!

There’s sooo much to do, lots of easy bits to get the creative juices flowing. If only you could have seen Georgia’s eyes light up when I suggested updating so clothes with new buttons! She ran and grabbed the box of buttons and started hunting out ones she likes.

Georgia rushed to get the buttons out!

As you can tell, lots for the kids to get involved in but at the same time it’s educational, you learn which materials are man made or natural, you learn what can be done with plastic and why its important to recycle when we do use plastic and it even reminded the girls of the time they bought some cuddly toys made from recycled plastic and it just keeps the message going that single use items are bad for the environment and there’s lots of possibilities.

I also loved the other activities, there’s a wordsearch, things to draw, things to find in your house, all simple things to do, but all helping develop your child’s knowledge on the subject of fashion.

I’m a big believer in individuality and The Fashion Fix definitely shows you how cool it can be to be unique and gives the knowledge to set them off on a little journey which is bound to be fun.

I’ll update the blog once we’ve a few items to share 😊

5/5 Stars

My thanks go to the author and Rachel’s Random Resources for having me on the blog tour! I received an ARC of the book as part of the tour to enable the girls to give the book the David’s Book Blurg treatment and they won’t want to get rid of this one anytime soon that’s for sure!

Wrath of the Picts (Warrior Druid of Britain Book 5) by Steven A. McKay – REVIEW

Today I’m reviewing Wrath of Picts by Steven A. McKay, Book 5 in the Warrior Druid of Britain series.

Here’s the blurb.

Princess Catia has gone missing and once again it falls to the legendary druid, Bellicus, to find her. Was the child taken by force, or did she go willingly with the Pictish warrior-woman, Aife?

Their trail leads far north to the windswept fortress of Dunnottar, so the druid must journey there with his companions, Duro, Eburus, and the fearsome wardog, Cai. Leaving Dun Breatann in the hands of Queen Narina and her enigmatic new husband, Ysfael, the friends ride out, but things are never as straightforward as they seem…

Violence and death follow Bellicus as he seeks to discover the fate of the princess. In doing so, he also finds himself on the trail of the swordsman, Lancelot, who disappeared months before when his warband was slaughtered by Saxons. Will the druid be in time to save them both? Or will their enemies, old and new, earn the bloody vengeance and glory they so desperately desire?

Ambition, lust, grief, and the power of the old gods combine in Wrath of the Picts as the druid and his companions are thrust towards a shocking finale that will leave Dun Breatann in turmoil and Northern Britain ravaged again by war.

Review

We are back with the Druid Bellicus and oh how excited I was for this one. Each instalment continues to develop the characters and the overall plot in such a way you just yearn for it but at the same time you don’t want the book to end!

We start off learning the fate of Lancelot, one of Arthurs loyal warriors. His is not a fate that any should suffer…starved..beaten physical and mentally but still sharp as a knife with his cunning and charm.

The setting moves to Dun Breatann and this is where things really kicked up a gear.. Queen Narina has a new husband.. but let’s just say he’s not a loving husband by any means, it’s a marriage of convenience for both.. but his wandering eye is about to cause trouble.

Aife, daughter of Drest is prisoner of Queen Narina, she is there to ensure Drest will not attack Dun Breatann again.. but Aife draws some unwanted attention leading her to escape.. if that wasn’t bad enough Princess Catia has gone with her.. but the Queen can’t quite understand why..the truth is hidden from her but for how long.

Bellicus soon returns and learns of Catia’s disappearance. Queen Narina and Bellicus share more than just a strong love for each other.. Catia….People are starting to notice the resemblance..

What neither know is that while her husband Ysfael has sent men out after the Princesses, their orders and motivations aren’t good.. and it can only mean trouble.

Now Bellicus has saved Catia once, he’s not about to let her out into the world without someone to look after her. He has a deep love for the girl so even though he doesn’t know the danger she’s in his course is set and he will see Catia home safely once again and he will find out why she ran away in the first place. Aife can only be heading one place.. home.. so Bellicus sets of in pursuit.

Catia ends up not only in the company of Picts but also Saxons! This brings back bad memories of a time she was abducted by Saxons.. but why are they there and do they mean her harm again?

Now this is where the tale really gets juicy! There’s some amazing twists.. misdirection and awe inspiring scenes as Catia comes face to face with Lancelot! She vows to see him free. She shares the blood of Bellicus so you just know she will see Lancelot and the other slaves free… but their escape isnt an easy one and not everyone will want to stand together and fight.. it’s each man for themselves.

Worlds collide from this point on and it’s a mad race for Bellicus to save Catia once again..will he make it.. and if he does what will he do when he learns the truth about Ysfael.. and anyway.. what is his ultimate goal.. he’s hiding something but you are held in suspense waiting for the answers to become clear.

I’m never one for massive spoilers but this is a cracking instalment.. the urgency.. the details.. the brilliant twists and character development.. simply untouchable greatness, you won’t find a better storyteller than Steven A. McKay.

I bang on about character development a lot but it’s pivotal to a tale..if you don’t feel the characters the book will never be a 5*.. but McKay knows how to do it. This book isnt just about the Druid.. each character shows their own style and you feel for them all, even the slaves that are held captive with Lancelot.. in a short space of time emotion is infused in written words masterfully.

The ending will not disappoint you! Again no spoiler’s here but I love how the author managed emotions in this one, for everyone.. especially Bellicus, he’s a Druid after all.. he should be all to control himself…. But really? Do you think he’s going to stand by and watch what’s happening.. No chance.

Cracking 5* read!

If you haven’t started this series yet come on!!! Why the hell not! It’s a corker! To find out more head to Goodreads or Amazon or any good bookseller.. you won’t be disappointed

Review

With a cover like this not only were my kids interested they had me hooked in too. It’s funny and gross so perfect for kids… and big kids.

For me what I loved was the way the book was written, it flowed well with lots of detail added but presented in a fun and eye-catching way. My girls are only 8 but you could see the cogs in their brains turning as bits of information sparked a question. A lot of which was answered in the book but boy did it make them think.

I also feel books like this are perfect as you don’t need to read it from start to finish, you can pick and choose if you like, or easily revisit without it effecting the flow. We started together from the beginning but then jumped around a little when the girls decided what they wanted to learn about next.

When asked what the girls enjoyed about the book, it was no surprise they found the illustrations hilarious and gross at the same time. They also enjoyed the questions posed throughout the book. It particularly blew their little minds to learn the skin is the largest human organ.  Georgia was certain it would have been those wriggly things inside you.. “Intestines” ha.

The book is grossly fun, it’s witty and educational but also effortlessly makes the reader understand we are all different, and why, so not to worry about it. Image is very important to children these days so anything we can do to try and remind them it’s ok to be different then I’m all for it .

I’m 37 and even I learnt something from this book. It’s difficult to capture a child’s imagination but Bodies, Brains & Bogies certainly does that!!

A 5* from me… the girls don’t believe in conforming to my star ratings and opted for their own max of 6* ha.

To find out more head to Goodreads or Amazon. Or any other good book retailor 🙂

My thanks go to the author, the publisher and Rachel’s Random Resources for having me on the blog tour! I received an ARC of the book as part of the tour but I’ll be adding this to my purchased collection too

BLOG TOUR – JULIA PRIMA A Roma Nova Foundation Story by Alison Morton plus 10 Question With…

Today I’m pleased to be taking part in the blog tour for JULIA PRIMA A Roma Nova Foundation Story by Alison Morton.

I was also lucky enough to have the chance to ask the author some questions about their work so keep reading on for a 10 Questions With feature. I’ve not had one on the blog in a while so very esxcited!!

Here’s the book blurb.

“You should have trusted me. You should have given me a choice.”

AD 370, Roman frontier province of Noricum. Neither wholly married nor wholly divorced, Julia Bacausa is trapped in the power struggle between the Christian church and her pagan ruler father.

Tribune Lucius Apulius’s career is blighted by his determination to stay faithful to the Roman gods in a Christian empire. Stripped of his command in Britannia, he’s demoted to the backwater of Noricum – and encounters Julia.

Unwittingly, he takes her for a whore. When confronted by who she is, he is overcome with remorse and fear. Despite this disaster, Julia and Lucius are drawn to one another by an irresistible attraction.

But their intensifying bond is broken when Lucius is banished to Rome. Distraught, Julia gambles everything to join him. Following her heart’s desire brings danger she could never have envisaged…

Review.

Julia Prima is book 10 in the wonderful Roma Nova series by Alison Morton. It’s a foundation story so you don’t need to have read the previous books in the series to enjoy it but it could hurt to get them all if you haven’t already 🙂 .

We meet Julia, trapped in a system that allows a female little independence, and at a time when family honour was held above all.

Julia is legally divorced but stuck in an environment with battling religious system.

When the eye-catching Lucius arrives Julia finally finds what she’s been after, a natural attraction that builds, emotions, the kind that will make you do anything.

Word soon spreads and as Julia’s ex husband holds some sway Lucius soon has his orders to pack his bags.. he has to follow orders even if he doesn’t want to but does he really know how Julia feels?

Now, Julia’s father is clever.. he knows she can’t be a spinster for the rest of her life and he finds her a match he hopes will work.. it’s not for love.. it would be convenience for both.. but Julia isn’t one for letting a man tell her what she can and can’t do in life and she sets out to find Lucius.. a long and hard journey.

Along the way religious beliefs at the time play a big part.. she’s a young woman.. while she’s not alone she really needs to be careful and story is soon thought of to keep her identify unknown but how long can they last without someone finding her…. Or have they already found her?

Now to the nitty-gritty.. plot.. FANTASTIC. I’ve read a lot of the authors work and I really felt this one just packed an extra punch.. it’s more emotional.. a desperate journey which I found more intense and gritty.. LOVED IT!

Development wise everything is paced well and as always the author manages to mix plot and romance seamlessly. If you are a follower of my reviews you’ll know I’m not a fan of romance when it feels forced into a story but Alison Morton adds these aspects naturally allowing the story to feel real… you feel the connections between the characters.

While I loved the character of Julia and her shear strength & determination I also fell in love with Aegius and Asella who accompany Julia on her journey. I’m not one for spoilers but these 3 together are what makes this book work.

Wonderful writing with an easy flowing exciting plot. What more could I ask for!

A spectacular 5*

Now would you like to see a 10 Questions With feature, here we go….

10 Questions with…

Q1. I’ve absolutely fallen in love with the Roma Nova Series, so I loved the idea of a prequel. Was it hard to come up with the plot or did you always have this in mind as the next step in the series?

Thank you for your kind words about the series! Every country has a history that has impacted its people and entered their genes. The story of Julia Bacausa and Lucius Apulius has always been lurking in the background since the first book, INCEPTIO, when Karen/Carina fled to the safety of the Roma Novan legation. Gaia Memmia, the legation officer, is helping her adapt:

She gave me a kids’ history book that illustrated how Apulius and his four daughters had founded Roma Nova at the end of the fourth century. I laughed at the heroic little cartoon characters waving their swords around, but Gaia took it all seriously. Descended from the Julii and Flavians, both tough political families, according to Gaia, Apulius had married a Celt from Noricum. Although Romanised for several generations, women in her family made decisions, fought in battles and managed property.

That was over ten years ago. Although I never planned to write a whole novel, the need to write the foundation story has crept up on me year by year…

Q2. No spoilers, but a lot of description was packed in superbly, locations, methods of travel, clothes, attitudes and so on. Did you do a lot of research into anything specific to help you write Julia’s tale?

The short answer – yes, everything! I have a general knowledge of the period and I know the Alpine areas of Austria and Italy, and the Tuscany and Umbria areas of Italy. I’ve walked round a lot of Rome’s hard pavements.  The most important thing to remember is that Ancient Rome lasted 1,229 years in the West. A great deal had changed by AD 370 even from the classical period of the first two centuries AD. We know our own world has changed out of recognition from, say the 1950s, yet many core elements are still there. Moving history on is something all historical fiction writers should be aware of, and I paid particular attention to those changes. By AD 370, togas had all but been abandoned along with the three dining couch convention and, horror of horrors, Roman soldiers wore trousers!

On the practical side, I had excellent help from Roman writing friends Ruth Downie on travel and Gordon Doherty on reference books for Late Antiquity.

Q3. I love a good prologue and JULIA PRIMA’s packs a punch! I heard recently some readers actually don’t enjoy a good prologue. What are your thoughts? For me, a prologue sets things up nicely, so when done right will hook the reader in from the first page.

Ha! Prologues. 🙂 Any two fiction writers or readers will argue about prologues! I’m neutral on them. If there’s one in a book, I always read it. If the author has put one in, then there must be a reason for it. In JULIA PRIMA, the prologue seemed to naturally fall into place. I needed to set the story up, but the incident wasn’t an integral part of the first part of Julia’s own story, although it becomes extremely important as it goes along. It also lets the reader be in on a secret that Julia doesn’t know…

Q4. One thing I’ve always loved about your characters is the strength and depth given to the female roles, turning society norms on their heads. In JULIA PRIMA this continues but we also see some wonderful development of a male character Aegius who plays a big role and you did a wonderful job painting his history. Did you find it easy writing his story?

I like portraying a strong male character who isn’t a love interest, but who is a typical tough nut. Their role is to be a friend/supporter who is straight-talking, stands no nonsense from the heroine, but is loyal. Lurio does this for Carina and Tertullius Plico for Aurelia. Whether any of them holds a candle for the heroine is for the reader to decide…

Q5. I know you’ve read some of my reviews previously and so you’ll know I’m not a romance man when it feels forced. Do you find it hard to balance the romance and plot within your stories, as it comes across effortlessly with just the right amount of detail to have things develop naturally.

I feel that a story without an emotional element is lacking; even the toughest thriller needs the characters to connect personally, even if not romantically, but it should be integral, not parachuted in as an afterthought. JULIA PRIMA is the most romantic novel I’ve written. It had to be, as the story is about two people who founded a dynasty. I’m a long-time member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and they gave me my first lessons in novel writing.  Whether you write steamy romance or adventure with a light romantic touch, the most important thing is to keep the characters and their feelings authentic within the plot of the story. Conflict, misunderstandings, separation, danger, heartache, persistence and courage work for me. It’s always about feelings, not mechanics!

Q6. Other than your wonderful Roma Nova series you’ve also stepped into the thriller genre with the Mélisende Thrillers series. How did it feel moving away from the comfort of Roma Nova?

Quite peculiar! It was Conn Igguldden who said I wrote a good riot and a great heroine when he gave me a cover endorsement for INSURRECTIO. He challenged me to write a modern European heroine with the same backbone. Obviously, I gave her failings as well. 😉 As I live in France and am both British and French, Mel/Mélisende developed naturally. I did six years in the British forces, so I could write her military background, except that the French Army has some interesting differences in recruitment, traditions and training! I did find a way to sneak Rome in with a chase round Trajan’s Market in Double Pursuit!

Q7. The Roma Nova series is a great example of alternative history done right. If you could go back, is there anything you aren’t 100% happy with?

I think every novelist looks back, tempted to go through their first book or first few books and change things, but I think it’s better to move forward. I’m equally sure that I write better than I did ten years ago and would probably get through several red pens if I went back. However, INCEPTIO, my first book, remains far and away my best seller.

Q8. So you’ve conquered alternative history, smashed thrillers. Is there any genre you’d love to try next? Or indeed any that you would stay away from?

Crumbs! That’s a difficult question. When I started, I was just writing a story that had been simmering away in my brain. Apart from general experience as a reader, I had no idea about genres. I loved, and still love, historical fiction, adventure, spy, thriller, international crime and conspiracy stories along with being a dedicated fan of Georgette Heyer Regency novels, so I’m really mixed up! I think my writing topics, interests and themes reflect this mix.

Periods of change fascinate me, as do the roles of women in history. I love stumbling upon stories of unsung heroines, or women who could have played a decisive part in history if they had been male. Anything slightly quirky, really, but not erotica!

Q9. What was the most recent book you’ve read yourself that you would recommend?

Currently, I’m re-reading Lindsey Davis’s epic Master and God. She stepped away from the Falco and Flavia Albia series and wrote a 480-page barnstormer about Emperor Domitian with two beautifully constructed fictional characters: pragmatic, effective, yet reserved vigilis turned Praetorian Gaius Vinius and freedwoman Flavia Lucilla, a capable and favoured hairdresser to the imperial family, yet a lonely young woman. All of Davis’s hallmarks are there – the research, the poignancy, the understatement, the compassion. And her drawing of Domitian is masterly. Highly recommended!

Q10. I ask this every time but that’s because I really need to know… What’s next? More books, I hope. 😊

Yes, more books. A second Roma Nova foundation story, this one set in AD 395, as I’ve only told half the story behind the origin of Roma Nova. This always happens to me. I write one book, then find I have too much story and need to write a second, or even a third! Then I’d like to tackle a third Mélisende modern thriller. Plenty to keep me busy!

Perfect Little Lies by S.A. Tameez – Review

Today I’m reviewing Perfect Little Lies by S.A. Tameez.

Here’s the blurb

After a body is discovered in the Thames, DS Nick Bailey & DC Zoe Hall begin the hunt for an elusive killer. The clues point to a notorious serial killer, but their instincts point them in a different direction.

With numerous suspects, each with a motive, the Major Crime’s Unit has its work cut out.

After joining the dots, they soon realise there is someone among them who will do anything not to get caught – even kill again.

Review

DS Bailey and DC Hall have a murder to solve. Is a notorious killer back.. The Sailor… or is this a copy cat?

I really loved the plot with this one, paced well, detailed scenes with character development thrown in to ensure you feel the motivations and emotions of the characters. In the fashion I like for the genre the characters have flaws.. we like to imagine those upholding the law are perfect but they are human themselves and they need to juggle personal and professional issues and the stakes are high.

Perfect Little Lies is the perfect mix of suspense & thriller.. it’s dark and devastating perfect tale.

Format wise I loved the feel, chapter length was spot on.. just long enough to hook a claw in you so much that you always have to go for one more chapter and before you know it you’ve demolished the entire book!

I loved the twists, very unexpected at times and it really makes the plot standout from just being a good book to being a 5* murderous success. Highly recommended!
