10 Questions with…Frank Westworth

Today I bring to you my 10 questions feature with author Frank Westworth. If you’ve been following my reviews you’ll know I’m a big fan of his work.

 

Frank is the author of the brilliant Killing Sisters series and also the JJ Stoner short tales I love so much.

First of all welcome to my blog Frank. The first question has to be the most important… so obviously I want to know if you are a tea or coffee kind of man? Or do you prefer something stronger?

Both. Everything. No limits. Whatever tastes right. No constraints. If I want to drink a coffee – I drink coffee. Tea’s the same, there are tea days and there are coffee days. And there are … something stronger days too. They are the jewels. When that time is the right time, only Stolichnaya will do … if there’s none nearby, then maybe Famous Grouse, or a lot of cheap beer. A lot… an awful lot.

Once a month I tend to let my hair down (not that I have much these days) and enjoy a slap up takeaway meal. I mean as much as I can eat. It’s my guilty pleasure. What’s yours?

Guilty? There is a thing. Why feel guilt about a pleasure? You deserve pleasure, and so do I. But… rules got laid down in all of us when we were growing up. I can still feel a little guilt about breaking those rules. So… ordering more food than I can eat, and wasting the rest. Drinking more than is sane, to the point of embarrassment. Riding a motorcycle further and faster through the wildest storm in the darkest night through the Welsh mountains…
Forbidden conversation in the dark hours on forbidden topics with people you don’t know and do not even like.

Are you afraid of anything strange? I myself am afraid of clowns which I believe is totally justifiable.

No. Fear is a strange thing. I’ve died twice – although I can’t recommend this much as a learning experience – and after that very little is a concern, almost nothing is an actual fear.

Are you a morning or night person?

Depends. A beautiful dawn is as beautiful as a beautiful evening, and the blackest night is as challenging as the brightest day.

Rufus appears out of nowhere with a time-traveling phone booth. You can go anytime in the PAST. What time are you traveling to and what are you going to do when you get there? (For those of you who don’t know who Rufus is… watch Bill and Ted. I love those movies!)

  1. I want to endlessly sit in an audience anywhere and listen live to Jimi Hendrix playing Little Wing. Loop. Repeat. Forever.

Now an important question. I don’t want facts, I want opinion. How many sides does a circle have? (I’ve had many a drunken conversation on the topic, exciting I know)

Ok so I guess I should ask some questions about your writing. Give me five words to describe JJ Stoner.

Relentless. Loyal. Vindictive. Clever. Violent.

Do you have any inspirations inside and outside of the writing community?

Oh yes. Far too many to list – you’d doze off. Every brilliant book is a unique inspiration, like every outstanding movie, and every great piece of music, and standing in love with mountains, forests, rivers, ships and cities. Everything, pretty much, is an inspiration – something to think about and enjoy.

What’s currently on your own bookshelf?

I’m reading Entanglement by Zygmunt Miloszewski, after that comes Kings of America by RJ Ellory. And after that? I’m not sure whether to dive into something SciFi or maybe another thriller of some kind. There’s a lot of books on the shelves.

What’s next for Frank Westworth?

A holiday – off to Malta. Holidays are the very best times to write fiction, and as I’ve hit the end of the trilogy I need to get into the fourth book. Trilogies always have four books, right? Right.

Review

So we are back with Carl Logan..or James Ryker as he’s now called. If you’ve not read The Enemy Series yet there’s no need to worry, a fan of the series will love this but it’s written in such a way that it works perfect as a standalone novel.

Ryker has tried to distance himself from his previous employers but how long did he really think it would be before someone tracked him down…not long enough and he’s soon sucked back into the world he tried so hard to forget.

The Red Cobra surfaces..Ryker never believed she was dead and this is his chance to finish what he started years before.

What we get is a very clever tale and it took a while to put all the pieces together, especially as we learn quickly not everyone is out to help Ryker. It’s one hell of an exciting tale and that ending left me in no doubt there’s more to come.

We get a brilliant backstory to the Red Cobra that shows how proficient a killer she is but has she met her match this time? And why has her finger prints suddenly resurfaced after so many years?

Engrossed would be an understatement. I loved this one and found myself totally fixated with finding out the truth much like Ryker.

The past has caught up to Ryker and as much as he wants to forget Logan, as he’s not that man anymore it’s easier said than done.

Brilliant from start to finish and the asking price of 99p on kindle is nothing so I happily snapped up a copy!

This is the best yet from Rob Sinclair.

Review

I must admit coming late to the series so I’ve not actually read the first two books in the series yet but I really wanted to see how the book would read without prior knowledge of the first two books. Well let me tell you, it wouldn’t be recommended to read this book as a standalone. The author does a great job at giving you tit bits of information to explain what has happened to get to where Stoner is right now but I feel you lack the character development this way, I was lucky to have read all the Stoner short tales so I knew a bit about JJ’s world and the characters to expect so can honestly say while it’s a great book regardless I think you’re better off having a fuller picture so you can enjoy it more.

Now on to the story..JJ is a man who knows how to kill, he’s a man of few words and emotions but in this story we find him broken after the events of the previous book. (If like me you come to the series at this stage don’t worry, the author explains everything nicely so I wasn’t confused at any time).

One thing is for sure..he won’t remain broken for long..he has an itch to scratch but first he needs to figure out who he can trust..not so easy for a man who is more than a little paranoid.

What we get is another great tale from Frank, it’s dark and gritty but Stoner adds his own humour to the tale which makes it fun. What makes this book different from the rest I’ve read from the author is the emotional development with Stoner. He’s a man of few words but we see in this book that he’s not a machine and he has to bring himself back from the brink.

Stoner slowly puts the pieces together and this is where Frank Westworth really shines..the suspense. You know everything is building up to the ending but you never know when a big event will happen and that ending certainly had the bang I was after.

Westworth did a great job of keeping me interested throughout the book. As with all the shorts Frank knows how to make his characters appeal. Motives are never clear at first and you can’t help but want to read more to find out what the hell is going on and who Stoner is going to kill. It’s all mystery and suspense building into one hell of a thrilling final act.

I won’t pretend to be some authority on authors but in my opinion Frank is a very unique writer and my only reason for a 4* is coming to the series late I found it took me a little while to figure out the killing sisters as their names are all very similar Charity, Chastity and Charm . I had to reread a few lines of text to remind myself who was who but it didn’t take any enjoyment away from the tale at all.

Full disclosure, I was given a review copy of the book in exchange for an honest review but if you’ve read my previous reviews for this author you know I’m more than happy to buy his work and that’s exactly what I’ve done.

The Deadly Cavern by Grace & Thomas Lockhaven – Review

Review

I’m a massive fan of young adult fantasy, I just love how simple, fun and enjoyable it can be and The Deadly Cavern was just that.

Tommy and Eevie have heard stories about a tree.. a tree that’s been around for years and holds a dark secret. When a fellow student claims to have been attacked by that very tree they set out to investigate.

Thery’re soon sucked into a labyrinth with challenges at every turn which they must complete in order to escape.

What I really enjoyed about the tale was the challenges themselves which had me thinking the possible solution in my head..it made it really fun an engaging.

I thought the writing was great and the plot sound, perfect for a young adult fantasy book. It wasn’t overly complex with its words but it never felt dumbed down either and the story flows easily allowing the younger readers to easily keep track of the events that happen. I’d say age range it’s aimed at early teens but I very much enjoyed it and will continue to see how the series plays out.

The ending really surprised me, perfect and sets up future books..It definitely left me with the wow feeling.

If you enjoy the genre you’ll love it! I’d also say if you’re looking for a fun easy read then why not give it a go. I’d certainly say this is a good one for parents to read with their children.

As kids we always dream of going on an adventure and its books like this that keep those dreams alive and the little boy in me excited.

The Escape by Steven A. McKay – Review

When the hard stares and furtive whispers turn into explosive violence the chase is on. Without any of his famous friends to help him though, will it mean the end for the giant outlaw?

This new stand-alone Forest Lord tale sees one of England’s favourite sons in a battle for his very life that will hugely entertain all lovers of action and adventure.

Review

So this is a super short fun tale that fits in with McKay’s Forest Lord Series. It slots in nicely between books 2 & 3 so I’d advise not reading this until you’ve finished book 2 at least.

McKay’s Forest Lord series mainly focuses around Robin Hood as you’d expect so this short is a good chance to shine light on Little John.

It’s short at 19 pages but does offer an action packed little tale to read. The plot is really good and it was a really nice change of focus Robin not being involved. Little John gets to show how much of a formidable opponent he is and the image McKay paints is spot on with how I’d imagine the character myself.

I do hope we see more short tales as I think these are the perfect accompaniment to the series.

As usual with McKay you get great writing and can expect a bit of violence but it’s not overly gruesome, which is one of the things I like about this authors books. I know it sounds weird but he manages to add fun to the fight.. That makes sense right? Ha

Overall this is a good short from McKay and it ticks all the right boxes but it really does highlight how much I miss the series. *Sighs*

Definitely one for the fans of the author and let me tell you that ending is what makes it 5*

Review

This is the third novel in the Charlie Cameron P.I. series. I loved the previous two books in the series so jumped at the chance to read this one. If you’ve not manged to read them yet you can see my reviews by clicking the images below.

I honestly didn’t think Owen Mullen could top the previous book but he certainly did and it was lovely to be back with Charlie and the loveable rogue Pat.

Once again Charlie gets drawn into two cases while also handling his personal life.. which is never easy.

I think it’s this work life balance that makes Charlie the likable and believable character he is. His private life is more complicated in this tale when an old flame shows up which brings Charlie’s emotions to the foreground.

I’d recommend reading the books in order if I’m honest but it would work as a standalone too as the author explains the background well enough, I just think you’d be missing out on the character development that’s built up.

So you’ll want to know about the cases our P.I gets sucked into. Well first off Gavin Law has went missing and his overbearing sister is out for answers. There’s not much to go on at first and it takes Charlie a while to be able to piece the dark and disturbing case together with some twists in the tale that really knock you for six.

The other case involves Sean Rafferty a gangster we’ve met before. I won’t give the game away with this one but when a gangster is involved you know there’s bound to be a body or two.

I’ve always loved Charlie but in this tale his Police friend Andrew Geddes shined and developed so well for me. I can’t wait to see what’s next and hope Geddes gets more page time.

The plot is dark and gritty, twists come from nowhere and you really are kept on your toes. It’s another brilliant tale from Mullen. What I really enjoy is that he manages to give us two tales weaved into one and at no point did it get confusing, With so many characters it would be easy to get lost but not with Mullen’s tales..everything is so clear to follow.

What I really need to love a book is to feel like the characters are real and with Charlie I get just that. I couldn’t think of anything I didn’t like about this book.

Review

I read Pam’s previous novel The Bowes Inheritance a while ago now and promised to keep up to date with her work and she’s offered up a lovely little short story.

In Three-Quarter Time is a moving tale to say the least but the ending left me looking to the future with positivity.

At 22 pages it’s a super short book but you get a full tale. The author easily sets the scene/introduces the characters and the plot develops at a steady pace.

Even in such a short novel there were some standout moments but obviously if I mentioned them it would give the game away but honestly this tale is a roller-coaster ride..up then down then up again.

If you’ve not read Pam’s full length novel yet I’d highly suggest you get this first to introduce you to her work.

All in all for a short its top-notch, likeable characters, good plot development with some twists and events that make the reader become emotionally involved.

Somewhere in the Shallow Sea by Dennis Macaraeg – Review

Synopsis

To save the life of his friend, a marine biologist must deliver the scientific compound he invented to kidnappers hiding deep within the jungles of the Philippines. Unexpectedly paired with his ex-lover for the mission, it’s a bit more than he signed up for.

Review

So what is the book about I hear you ask?

Well the book follows Danny a scientist, his friend Blake has been kidnapped and he has the compound the kidnappers are after. Danny, with the help of some friends and an ex-lover sets out to save  Blake.

The plot was good with a few twists thrown in although I did feel events happened a little too easy at times.. just when Danny thinks all hope is gone an acquaintance of a friend can help. Nothing so bad as to ruin the plot but I would have enjoyed seeing Danny struggle a bit more for leads.

The writing was good, fast paced and easy to follow with a great amount of knowledge added by the author to set the scene. This really did help me imagine the locations described which sound lovely but at the same time dangerous.

Towards the end of the tale the plot picks up a notch and I really enjoyed the ending.

I liked the characters although with such an action packed tale it was hard to get to know them. The romance in this book didn’t feel forced, which suits my tastes. There was a natural progression to it which made it more believable and if you’ve read my reviews you’ll know I don’t do romance ha

Overall this is a good book, think spy thriller without the good guy having any skills or tech support.

The author shows great imagination with his plot and it was really great to see how well this story mixed with the descriptive text of the tale. I definitely think there has to be more to come from this author so I’ll keep an eye out for what’s next!

To spare themselves the same fate, the Calderans erected a battery of guns to fend off the airships of the mainland. They isolated themselves from the madness of the world, choosing instead to focus on the pursuits of art and creativity. Few believe the technologically advanced but socially barbarous outsiders have anything to offer. Amanita Graus, though, is hoping that they do.

Nita’s mother has lost her livelihood and perhaps soon her life to a terrible disease. Already the black sheep of the family for embracing engineering rather than art, Nita resolves to leave the safety of her home and do whatever it takes to find a cure. Helping her in her journey are an eccentric crew of smugglers; the gruff Cap’n Mack, the simple but enthusiastic Lil and Coop, the arrogant marksman Gunner, the surly surgeon Butch, and the irritable mascot Wink. To survive and find what she seeks she’ll need to earn their trust, follow their rules, and meet face to face with the people who pull the strings of their society.

Review

I’ve had this book on my TBR list for a while and I thought it was about time I gave the author my attention. I’m very glad I did.

Free-Wrench follows Nita, she’s good with machines..I think she could probably fix anything given the time.

The book starts off giving a little background to Nita’s life..  she works in the steamworks which is a very demanding job and we quickly learn how good she is.

A couple of events happen that conspire to change her life forever. Her mother has an illness which can’t be cured and by chance see gets to meet some smugglers.. these smugglers know a lot about the world and know a cure is out there..but it will be a high price if they can get it for her at all.

Nita is happy to pay the price but doesn’t trust the smugglers so adds her services to the bargain in order to keep an eye on things.. this is when things quickly escalate.

Loyalties are tested, relationships forged in the heat of battle and secrets are revealed..It appears those who pull strings hold all the cards..but for how long?

This was a very enjoyable tale with airships and gun battles and one very interesting/fun and nosy lead character.

What made the tale even better was the crew of the airship, the Wind Breaker. Each have their own reason for being on board and we learn a little about each throughout the tale. The interactions between the characters is really what made me enjoy the book, fun at times then at others deathly serious.

This is a great introduction to a series which I fully intend to keep reading. I can only say I’m sorry it took me so long 🙂

It’s a fast paced, well written, easy flowing, wild ride of a tale suitable for young adults up and at 153 pages it won’t take you long to be hooked in.

Review

I jumped at the chance to read this book as soon as I learned the subject matter of the story..Twins. Conjoined twins no less. I feel very blessed that my own twins girls had what is classed the perfect birth with no issues so when I learned a little about this story I just had to read it. I couldn’t imagine the stress the situation would have put Abani under.

The book starts off slowly with very plain speaking informative chapters. It’s Abani’s early life..how she meets a local boy.. they grow up and become closer one night.. and that night changed everything.

Abani takes the twins on as a single mother, the father having no knowledge of girls birth but she has an amazing group of people watching over her.

When the chance to separate the twins arrives it’s a tough decision but in the end she must do what’s best for the girls and in this case it means travelling from Nepal to Singapore to get the care they need.

It’s an emotional ride with a lot of low moments but overall the story is very inspirational to me.. Abani never gave up..she battled on throughout what would have been a very trying time.

The writing is short and sharp..no messing around..straight to the point. Once I got used to the style I loved it..the story flowed so well from chapter to chapter and this no-nonsense approach meant I really took in what the author was saying.

If you are looking for a happy tale this isn’t it..this is a good book but a hard story to read, it hits you in the gut..life isn’t fair..but you must never lose hope!
