The Expired by B. P. Smythe – Review

Next up on David’s Book Blurg I’m reviewing The Expired by B. P. Smythe.

Here’s the blurb

‘The Expired’ is a psychological thriller masterpiece showing how vulnerable people can be brainwashed to become sleepers (Manchurian Candidates) and used by corrupt politicians to further their own ends. ‘The Expired’ shadows true accounts of government sleeper programmes set up during the Korean War and the East West Cold War.

Commander Gregory Potting is a former head of MI6 Intelligence and the governments most trusted Senior Adviser for Internal Affairs.

His position is put to the test in 1973 when a bizarre psychological plot unfolds that isinextricably linked to a London terrorist attack, a cocaine drug scam, a homosexual called Francis Hodder who suffers from schizophrenia and changes from time to time to Roxanne – a transvestite prostitute who robs and murders his clients.

Francis Hodder is a transsexual who preys on gay men. As a child he is abused by his father who is head of government security. Francis becomes an embarrassment to MI6 because of his gender leaning. He is brainwashed to become a Sleeper assassin triggered by code words to kill personnel who threaten government security. Francis becomes a manipulated pawn, who by mistake during a sexual encounter with a Black September terrorist, uncovers plans for a deadly attack on a densely crowded popular sports event to kill thousands of people to further the cause of EL Fatah and Black September.

Review

After reading the blurb about the book I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it.. There’s so much going on… I couldn’t quite see how it would work..Well Mr. Smythe sure showed me, I was sucked in from the first page.

The story mainly focuses on Francis Hodder, a transsexual who abused as a child has grown up to have a long list of issues.. first and foremost he’s got a split personality going on. We have Francis but also Roxanne..

A powerful player in the government sees a way to make use of Francis and he’s brainwashed to kill on command.

What happens next is a rather expertly woven series of events where we learn of other individuals that have been brainwashed.. it’s seems this powerful player is setting up a chessboard of pieces so to speak, ready to do whatever they are told to.

As the game goes on players are eliminated while others emerge and a terrorist plot becomes clear..

I’ve not read anything from the author before but from this I felt he must have one hell of an imagination to put this together. We have Francis and his double life but also a terrorist plot which felt like it could have been a separate tale.

It works enough for me to enjoy the tale but the plot line explored towards the end of the book with Francis’s past and present colliding was the best bit and the terrorist plot was overshadowed by Francis.

The author manages to wrap the tale up nicely..It didn’t feel like any loose ends were there and to be honest I quite enjoyed the book even though it’s quite an unusual read for me.

Overall the pace of the tale is good and the chapter length is easy to swallow, add in a strangely unique plot and you’ve earned a 3* on this one.

My thanks go to the author for the chance to read and review the book in exchange for an honest review.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey by Gordon Doherty (@GordonDoherty) – Review

Next up on David’s Book Blurg Is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey by Gordon Doherty.

Here’s the blurb

Greece, 5th century BCE. Kassandra is a mercenary of Spartan blood, sentenced to death by her family, cast out into exile. Now she will embark on an epic journey to become a legendary hero – and uncover the truth about her mysterious lineage.

Review

Gordon Doherty fast became a favourite author of mine while reading his Legionary series. When I heard he was on board with an Assassin’s Creed book I felt two emotions, firstly happiness that Gordon’s work would reach a wider audience and also apprehension… I’m not really a gamer..would I still enjoy the book?

Well I needn’t have worried..Gordon smashed it again!

This tale follows Kassandra who as a child was cast out by her family.. she went against the gods and for that there is no forgiveness…all she cared about was saving little Alexios..her sibling..only for her parents to abandon her.

Years have passed and we find Kassandra using her Spartan skills to get by..she’s a mercenary and for the right price she will sort your problems out for you.

From the off you can tell that while Kassandra needs money..she still has a few morals left. This is confirmed as soon as we meet Phoibe..A little girl Kassandra has decided to take care off..if she doesn’t no one else will. The relationship between these two was a joy to follow.

The plot is well-developed and we have a nice build-up for the character as we see her skills put to use. Tasked with using her talents to obtain a treasure little does she know it’s really just a test and the past won’t stay hidden for long.. it’s going to hit hard.

From one lead to another Kassandra sets out on a path to learn about herself and the fateful night she was lost to her parents.. little does she know that all is not as she first thought.

Gordon Doherty gives us twist after twist and effortlessly paints a picture of Kassandra’s life and the places she visits. This might be an adaptation of a game but Doherty manages to give the written word depth and emotion that no game has been able to give me in the past. It’s written in such a way that young adults and old alike will love it with the perfect amount of detail to keep his diehard fans happy but also suck in new readers without overwhelming them.

I really think Gordon managed to put his own style of writing into an established series which is no mean feat.

Overall Assassin’s Creed Odyssey earns it’s place on my bookshelf..fast paced, exciting and vivid.

I’m always impressed when I read Gordon’s work and he didn’t let me down with Odyssey.. I loved it!

My rating – 5/5 Stars

Michael : The Triptych Chronicle #3 by Prue Batten (@pruebatten) – Review

Next up on David’s Book Blurg I’m reviewing Michael by Prue Batten.

Here’s the blurb

Genre – Historical Fiction

Michael Sarapion, merchant and thief, returns to Byzantine Constantinople from which he fled the year before in fear of his life. In his company is Tobias, the dwarf brother of an icon thief and Ahmed, an Arab galleymaster with secrets.

Michael searches for his greatest treasure, something lost to him twelve years before. Filled with grief and fury, he intends vengeance, but he must trust in priests, defy the empire and guard those dearest to him as he searches high and low.

As Byzantium’s Angelid dynasty weakens, as Genoa and Pisa challenge Venice’s trading excellence, so merchants become thieves and murderers. Michael understands that to restore what is rightfully his, he must kill… or be killed..

Review

Michael is the third book in the Triptych Chronicle. This instalment follows Michael Sarapion as he confronts his past whilst also trying to keep the secrets he holds deep just that.. secret.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the series but the plot of Michael was truly breath-taking and for me was the best yet..The man has lost so much but little does he know glimmer of hope remains.

The main focus of the tale is Michael and has past.. a family lost..his inner turmoil. He seeks to bury the past with work. When he receives his chance of redemption he set outs under the guise of a business trip for his Venetian trading house. How long can he keep his true intent secret?

What the author really does well for me is mix a exciting plot with a very detailed view of trading at the time and the rewards up for grabs.. as well as the dangers they risked. Even friends aren’t always to be trusted when money is concerned and dangers lurk around every corner.

The pace of the tale is set perfect to grab you.. there’s no let up.. there’s always something on the horizon and Michael can’t let his guard down and you can really see how much of a strain this puts upon him as his journey continues… It’s a wonder how he even manages to stand up at times the amount of stress his body must be under.

Prue Batten gives the reader a spectacularly gripping plot and very appealing characters, each has a part to play in the tale and they all get their chance to shine. Its a talent to make a story become so real but Batten does it with ease.

A series to be savioured..Each tale fits nicely with the last but at the same time stands alone..A true joy to read.

Out of the Silence Blog Blitz.jpg

Here’s the blurb

Genre – Psychological Thriller

My Rating 5/5 Stars!!!!!

Star investigative reporter Ralph Buchanan’s glory days are behind him. His newspaper has banished him to Pakistan, not knowing the greatest moment of his long career is waiting for him there.

When Simone Jasnin asks him to help expose a grave injustice, he finds himself embroiled in a harrowng tale that began in a dusty settlement in rural Punjab, setting in motion a chain of events that will change the lives of everyone involved.

Seven years later in the city of Lahore, members of a prominent family are being brutally murdered, one by one. The only clue is a hand-carved wooden bangle left at the scene of each crime.

As the list of suspects grows and the tension mounts, Ralph realises the answers might be closer to home than he ever thought possible.

Solving the mystery will put him back on top but at what cost?

Only when the smoke clears will the killing stop and honour be satisfied…

Review

Owen Mullen fast became a favourite author of mine over the last couple of years..his crime thrillers always have me hooked so of course I’d want to read his latest work.. so much so I didn’t even read the blurb.. I knew I’d love it.. I just didn’t know how much ..or that it would move me as much as it did.

Under an amazingly written story we truly get a heart wrenching tale of abuse and injustice..so much so I really felt for all of those involved..it was impossible not to get invested in this story and I promise it will stay with you.

Doctor Simone Jasnin finds a woman in need.. she has a story to tell.. her tale isn’t for the fate hearted but needs to be shared. This is where Ralph Buchanan comes in..he’s flawed like all the best characters, but slowly he earns his chance at redemption.

The tale Simone recounts is a tale of young blossoming love, Afra and Jameel, would be lovers but kept apart simply due to perception of worth. Jameel has nothing to offer therefore is no good.. They end up going along very different paths… and Afra’s is one of immense pain.

While Afra’s tale is retold we also learn what becomes of Jameel..a man who proves he’s worth tenfold..

Jameel and Ralph’s journeys collide as we delve deeper into the life of Afra..no matter her pain she never gives ups.

Out of the Silence is a gut churning tale of abuse and revenge.. a tale that needs to be told.. and Afra’s tale will be heard.

I can’t say I’ve ever been moved by written words before..yes I enjoy lots of books.. I love quite a few..but to be moved by the written word.. that to me is saved for notes from those nearest and dearest to you.. not just any old written word…but..I felt Afra’s pain..it hurt and it made me feel like no book ever has.

This is a tough tale.. not for the faint hearted.. a well written tale that deserves to be shared. A thought-provoking tale that really gets you thinking.. just because we don’t see abuse doesn’t mean it’s not going on.. it’s out there and we need to do what we can to stop it.. hopefully Afra’s tale will help.

Owen is no one trick pony.. he’s pure talent..I dare you to read this and try and tell me you didnt feel something.. it would be impossible.

Despite their best efforts to avoid unwanted visitors, another ship is en route. Their arrival does not guarantee the safety of those on board, and may ultimately lead to their demise.
With his position on the ship on the line, can Del stave off an attack or are their deaths inevitable?

Review

The Law and Crucible Saga is made up of 3 short stories. The focus of each is different but one common factor is Captain Law and his crew.  Law’s gotten his hands on some information which could be quite valuable but he’s out looking for someone..but who and why?

I enjoyed the series more as I went along. At first I was a little confused as you arrive already into the action so to speak so it’s only as the author give you little bits of info that you piece events together.

When we get to the second book in the series we seem to have lost two of characters from the first book who joined the crew right at the end which through me a little if I’m honest.

The addition of Thea and Del in the later tales saved the series for me and really made me quite enjoy it.

Overall an interesting series which I feel would have worked quite well as full length novels. Just when things start the get interesting you’ve reached the end..I loved the plot but really wished for a bigger page count.

My rating 3/5 Stars

Marik’s Way by Nick Brown (@randomrome) – Review

Next up for review is Marik’s Way by Nick Brown.

Here’s the blurb.

Genre – Fantasy

My rating – 5/5 Stars

Stay out of trouble.
Though this is Marik’s mantra, he rarely seems able to follow it. Having escaped a brutal civil war in his native South, the former soldier now roams the distant North, trying to forget his past and forge some kind of future. Marik suspects he is paying the price for the moment of weakness that caused him to flee his comrades and family and everything he knew. Because however hard he tries, intrigue and danger are never far away …
After an unlikely series of events see him employed as a bodyguard, Marik survives a terrifying shipwreck and washes up on a distant shore. He finds himself in the Salka Delta, an isolated region of islands and marshes. Here, a mercenary named Reverrik has enslaved the local people and Marik is soon recruited by a tiny band of rebels. As well as traitors and outlandish creatures, he also faces Hammerhand, a giant enforcer feared by all.
Staying out of trouble is never easy.

Review

I’m familiar with the authors work so when I noticed a new fantasy novel out it was a no-brainer to buy a copy.

Marik’s got a past and that’s exactly where he wants to leave it..the past.

As a former soldier there’s only a few work options open to him but he doesn’t have the best of luck.. trouble seems to find him no matter what.

Some unfortunate events lead Marik to a point where he finally thinks things are starting to look up for him..boy was he wrong..he only goes and get himself shipwrecked..

He survives against the odds .. time to relax you’d think? No chance.

Marik finds himself in a small village.. the more he looks the more he notices the strange looks..people here clearly don’t have much and they seem to be a little on edge at times..but why?

A mercenary named Reverrik has the people scared witless..many have died at his command and others enslaved to do his bidding.

As much as Marik doesn’t want to get involved he just can’t help himself.

From here Marik sets out on a journey to meet up with a known band of rebels.. the plan.. take down Reverrik forever.. but not everyone is on the same side..

Marik’s Way is a fast paced, action packed fantasy adventure full of twists. The author manages to paint a vivid image of the events that play out, at times bloody and gruesome..it’s an epic ride so perfectly paced you can’t help but get sucked in.

The Reaper’s Kiss (The Ripper Legacies #3) by Robert Southworth (@robius71) – Review

Next up for review is The Reaper’s Kiss, book 3 in The Ripper Legacies series by Robert Southworth.

I’m the self-proclaimed biggest fan of Rob’s.. he’s the reason my blog even exists.. that said he knows I won’t take it easy on him.

Here’s the blurb.

Genre – Thriller/Alternative History
My Rating – 5/5 Stars

London 1891
Sir Simeon Harkness has joined his son in the pursuit of the infamous killer. With his resources, it is not long before the scent of new lines of investigation are detected. The Ripper can feel the oppressive breath of his pursuers upon his skin. He must hide his tracks and remove those that once called him master. The hunt is on but the Ripper will not go quietly to the gallows

Review

We are back with William Harkness and his men but now the full force of Sir Simeon Harkness is added to the game..If you haven’t already you should read the first two instalments in the series. The Reaper’s Breath and The Reaper’s Touch.

William is on the hunt for his greatest enemy again.. The Ripper..and the followers of Cronos that he controls.

Along the way in the final hunt there are twists and turns everywhere that turn the whole series on its head… nothing is ever as simple as it seems.

This was the best yet from the author. The character development of William and his partner Emily was brilliant. The story belonged to Sir Simeon for me though.. he’s the game changer..you learn so much more about the man and it really changes your views of the man just as it does for his son William.

If I’m honest there’s just too many characters I loved in this instalment.. Faraday, Finch and Tallow to name a few. Every character is unique and has their own place in the tale.. Have you ever read a book when the characters are all quite samey.. yeh not Robert Southworth’s characters..each are memorable in their own right.

I’ve followed the authors work from day one and he never fails to get the plot spot on!..there’s so much jam-packed into this book it was gripping.

Southworth is a master of alternative history. He has a talent of seeing a story where no one else does and I hope there’s many more tales to come. The way he can take a snapshot in time..meld it into something he can work with then write 3 books will always amaze me.

Towards the end of the book the action comes thick and fast and the author saves the best bits until the last few chapters..simply breathtaking moments that had me on edge.

The Reaper’s Kiss ticks all the boxes on my list..a first rate plot..real character development that doesn’t feel forced and twists that give the wow factor.

Robert Southworth never fails to amaze me with his storytelling skills and I can’t urge you enough to give his work a try.

Free Book Alert – First Contract by Frank Westworth

Who doesn’t love a free book? I know I do.

This week the first book in the Stoner short stories is free!

Here’s the blurb..let me know what you think.

FIRST CONTRACT: A decade ago, JJ Stoner was a soldier. He killed people for a living and made no bones about it. On a scorching day in the Iraqi desert, when British blood stained the sand, he over-stepped the mark. Men died in compromising circumstances; too many men for an easy explanation. Faced with a dishonourable discharge and accusations of murder, Stoner accepted an offer from a stranger who represented an intelligence agency. Suddenly, Stoner found himself half a world away and about to execute his first private contract…

If you’re looking for a new series to get into now is the time.

I loved the book. It’s got what I need in a thriller..guns and a not so talkative lead character.. Theres good developement throughout the series, JJ Stoner’s not the most open as I’ve said..a shoot first kind of guy..explain later.. but as the series goes on you get little bits here and there to learn more about him and his life which keep you hooked in. There’s always a need for more… and I just love the series.

Keep an eye out this week for a couple reviews from me for books 6 & 7 in the series!

The Intervention by Patrick Gilbert-Roberts – Review

Next up for review is The Intervention by Patrick Gilbert-Roberts.

Here’s the blurb –

Genre – Science Fiction

Pages – 257

My rating – 3/5 Stars

A young woman, alone on the Stuart Highway, 250 miles from Uluru in the centre of Australia, it’s 110 o, if you’re looking for remote and inhospitable, this is right up there with the best! What is she doing there? Jeff Ridsdale wonders the same thing as he pulls up beside her. Of course, he rescues her and, in so doing, sets in train the most extraordinary chain of events.
On his way to Sydney to begin a yacht delivery, Ridsdale, a down-to-earth, practical man, is certainly not the sort to believe in UFO’s or alien abductions. Imagine his stupefaction then when, having been knocked unconscious on the boat in a storm, he comes-to on board a Kareeti interstellar vessel.
The Kareet have plans for Earth that the human race is not going to like. They have selected Ridsdale to be a conduit for communication. Implanted with a ‘channel’ he is returned to Earth to somehow arrange a meeting of the UN Security Council.
The Kareet demand that Earth nominate a top line micro-biologist. Lena Sandmeier steps forward. Can she and Ridsdale do anything at all to thwart the alien’s devastating intent?

Review

The Intervention follows Jeff Ridsdale as he’s whisked away and an extraordinary life changing whirlwind of an adventure that will change the world as we know it.

While out driving Jeff picks up a young lady.. her story is a bit strange but she’s in the middle of nowhere so Jeff does the right thing and gives her a lift. She tags along on Jeff’s latest commission, delivering a yacht to its new owner.. when the seas start to get stormy it’s the start of a wild adventure.

The truth comes out..aliens are real..and they have use for Jeff..he’s going to be their conduit to speak to the UN Security Council.

I really liked the thought-provoking plot when aliens arrive to deal with the human race. They have seen what we’ve done to the planet and they are here to set things right..but not everyone on Earth will like what they have planned..

There’s not a great number of characters in the tale which makes it easy to follow but I never quite warmed to Jeff and how what seemed a quite random abduction turns out to be the best thing that could have happened as the aliens need to get in contact with the UN…while Jeff can’t do this directly he just so happens to have contacts who can get him the access he needs.. it just felt a bit too easy for me and I never really connected with him.

Overall it was very well written with a plot that I quite enjoyed. There will be a few people including myself who will see the issues the aliens raise as something we are ignoring currently, it’s really a book to make you stop and think.

There’s a little twist in the direction of the tale which I quite enjoyed..the humans don’t really like the options the aliens are offering and come up with what they believe is a better option..but will everyone agree?

Definitely an author I’d follow to see where his work takes him.

River God by Wilbur Smith – Review

Now, you might wonder why I’m reviewing a book that was 1st released so long ago..Well here’s the thing.. I’ve only been reading properly the past few years..I’ve lots to catch up on and one thing I want my blog to be is a true reflection of my reading journey…old and new books it doesn’t matter to me.. it’s the journey those books take me on that counts.

Genre – Historical Fiction

Taita is a humble slave; an expert in art, poetry, medicine and engineering, as well as keeping important secrets. He is the most treasured possession of Lord Intef. Yet when Intef’s beautiful daughter Lostris is married to the Pharaoh, Taita is commanded to follow her, and swiftly finds himself deeper than he ever could have imagined in a world of deception and treachery.

But outside the palace, the great kingdom of Egypt is divided, and in even greater danger. Enemies threaten on all sides, and only Taita holds the power to save them all . . .

Review

I picked up a bunch of Wilbur Smith books cheap.. I’m late to the party I know but I thought it was about time I gave his work ago.

River God follows Taita, a slave who ends up helping the most important man in Egypt.. The Pharoah.

Taita used to be the property of Lord Intef and Intef is not happy to let him go even if it is to serve his daughter Lostris. Taita know’s Lord Intef’s secrets and Intef wants nothing more than to quieten Taita permanently.

If that wasn’t bad enough Taita’s troubles increase when it’s clear Lostris does not love the Pharoah and never will.. not so bad in itself..the issue is she loves another..Tanus, the fair-haired warrior..most trusted of the Pharoah..ooh it’s getting good isn’t it. Can Taita keep this secret from the Pharoah? and at what cost?

There are bigger problems afoot too as an army approaches.. This army uses tactics unknown to the Egyptians and many will fall in the battle. The survivors flee but vow to return to take back what was once theirs.

The tale was quite graphic at times, dark and disturbing all of which had me hooked.

My only issue is the main character Taita. It’s claimed he is a humble slave but he is anything but humble. He’s the bloody best at everything and seems quite happy to make sure everyone knows that. He’s got so many talents the list goes on – surgeon, tactician, weapons designer, political adviser, lip reader.. he even designs a wheel and learns to ride a horse in the blink of an eye. He simply grated on me at times.

The other thing that didn’t work for me was the style of writing. To start with it felt like 1 chapter of plot, then 2 of detailed description then back to 1 chapter of plot progression then back to 2 chapters of description. It took too long for me to get to the good stuff. Once it did though I was hooked and I plan to continue on with the series to see where things end up..

I have the feeling Taita will never grow on me though.. time will tell… I do hope I’m wrong.
